Hmm...

I still listen to the stuff I've always liked, and pretty much don't listen to the stuff I've never liked, so not much has changed.

But I love death/black metal now, whereas in the early days of it I wouldn't have given it a second thought. I didn't hate it first, I just didn't know much about it. It's kinda funny; the older I get, the more extreme some of my tastes become.
My taste in music has grown over the years but if I hated it I will always think it is shit.

Linkin Park (poor musicians), Slipknot (Good musicians/terrible drummer/poor songs), Nirvana (one junky holding down 2 great musicians), Typical modern pop music... anything with rap music... Boom Boom Dance Music... it's all bollocks!

However if a band I don't like releases a good song I will not deny liking it.

An example would be Behemoths latest single. I'm not a fan by any means. Waaay too extreme for me but it's a catchy tune.

I hated most bands before it was cool to hate them. Then, when it became cool, I would start to like them, just to buck the trend.

Like Peter, Paul, and Mary.

And Raffi.

Man, that Canadian really kicks ass.
Guns and Roses. At the time when they were popular I was into hardcore punk and death metal, so GNR was a little too soft and radio friendly for my tastes. But in the last few years I've been noticing just how talented they were and now when I hear 'Sweet Child of mine' or 'Welcome to the jungle' I just hear really good rock and roll music.
Pretty much anything i was growing up with i despised in 80's.....now *most* of that music i love and hate the current gen music ie post 2000/2005 onwards
I used to hate Slipknot and Avenged Sevenfold, but nowadays i really enjoy them. I have to admit i jumped on the hate bandwaggon for Avenged and the huge amount of "teen fans" the band has certainly doesn't help, but it's actually a pretty good band that is constantly evolving and improving their songs. The first 2 albums from Avenged are still kind of meh for me (too much of a metalcore vibe and i really don't like metalcore, but there are a few pretty good songs that stand out), but everything that came after it was really damn good. Their last album was awesome and their concerts are REALLY good (i've been seen them play twice).

I used to hate Stone Temple Pilots growing up, now it just merges into the nostalgia of things from that era.

pugsarecool: Hey guys, for a long time, I really couldn't stand System of a Down. I hadn't listened to them for awhile, and I went out on a whim last night and bought the Toxicity album. What a great album!! They're really growing on me. Another band I used to *hate* but they've been growing on me lately as well is Slipknot. I think cause all the kids who thought they were "cool" in middle school wore their shirts, so I kind of started to associate the band with jerks and never gave them a fair chance. Same thing with Korn. I used to think they sucked(Which is honestly the complete opposite), now I own their first four albums, listened to Freak on a Leash well over 100 times(I'd say it's even one of my favorite songs of all time), and I have tickets to see them this summer.

What are some bands you really used to despise but now you find that you actually really enjoy them?

EDIT: Grammar error :p
Do yourself a favor and go to a Slipknot concert. It's the best concert i have ever been to, and i've already seen Metallica, Megadeth, SOAD, Guns, Slayer, Alice in Chains, Motorhead, Helloween, Rob Zombie, Avenged Sevenfold and a few others.
U2, I hated on them a lot at the beginning, but now I like them.

On saying that, I can only listen to their stuff up to and inc Rattle and Hum, after that I start to feel ill.

How is that possible? They sound even worse live then they do in studio and im not just saying that. Their stage shows are nice but nothing you can't see done better by KISS, Motley Crue or rammstein.

From a professional and technical standard Helloween is one of the best Live bands I have had the pleasure of seeing. Not only was their live performance extremely well played and exciting but the band themselves were very easily approachable after the show and were very nice blokes.
I dunno if there have been any bands, artists, or whatever you call people who make music, that I hated in particular.

That said, I do find that given enough time with most genres of music that I "hate", I'll usually end up finding something in them that I'll enjoy. A lot of genres seem to be covered in a layer of over-enthusiastic fans and stereotypes, but if I peel that away and dig for a while I tend to find they eventually start making sense.
Nowadays I'm actually very hesitant to dismiss or really say I hate any kind of music because of how often this turns out to be and how often I end up being wrong about it.

I do wonder if that is a part of nostalgia to some extent. Spending more time with something might mean you have had more time to really explore it and figure out what you might like about it.

Buuuut, this summer I'm seeing Korn, Rob Zombie, Megadeth, HellYeah, Machine Head, Slayer, FFDP, Kill Devil Hill, Black Label Society, and whatever else comes around here. I'd really like to see Primus, Prong, Deftones, Metallica, Stone Temple Pilots (with Scott Weiland), Faith No More and Rush.

Usually i will not like a new song when i first hear it if it is very 'unique' then after my subconscious brain has a few days to make sense of it, quite often i will then realize that i like it!

When i was a teenager (never been into metal music at that point) many years ago and first heard Metalica's 'black' album, i thought "what is this shhhhhiiiiiiit". Probably took my brain several months to work it out and realize i love it! Funny thing, until this day it is the only heavy metal i ever liked, the rest still sounds like shit, even all the subsequent metalica songs,,,, except 'one' of course... and a few other rare jewels here and there, such as 'Voodoo people' by the Prodigy. (I know, the standard for heavy metal music Metalica's black album plugged into my brain is just way too high).

Sound worse than they do in studio? That's debatable. I definitely don't agree with that. There are songs that i enjoyed much more live than on the CD, like Duality, Wait and Bleed, Spit it out and Before I Forget.

By the way, Slikpnot's live performance was considered to be the best in Rock in Rio 2011 both by the critics and the public. And they played alongside Metallica and Motorhead at that day, not to mention the other bands at the festival like Guns, SOAD, RHCP and they even beat "pop" bands like Coldplay (the band is horrible, but they have a shitload of fans here).

From a technical point of view i think Slayer was the best i have seen. I enjoyed Helloween's concert, but it was far from being one of the best i've seen.

I envy you. We barely ever get good concerts here in Brazil (it's getting better, though, we already got quite a few good bands here this year). Right now the bands that i want to see the most are 5FDP, Rammstein and Anthrax (the only band out of the big 4 that i still haven't seen live).

Outside of maybe a particular album "growing on me" over the course of a couple of days, I don't think I have ever warmed up to a band. I've only had it happen the other way around.

I used to listen to a pretty wide spectrum of music with plenty of the heavier stuff being in strong rotation. A few years ago I went through something I will label as a life lesson. Right afterwards I basically lost my interest in heavy music altogether. I would start listen to albums I used to love and just kinda felt like it was weighing me down some how, so I just stopped listening to it. Not sure what one thing had to do with the other, but I guess I'm just not as angry anymore. That or I'm getting too old for all the loudness.

....SOTD is an interesting situation, because I did, and I mean on an intense level, hate their debut album. However, the aforementioned Toxicity album was one I equally revered. I'm fairly confident in saying I would still feel the same way about each album, so I don't it's a case of acquiring a taste for a given band. One band just put out two offerings I felt differently about.
