liquidsnakehpks: some people hate steam here with a passion , no facts you post will have an impact on them, the smart thing to do is , enjoy steam yourself add friends who like it and watch the steam hate threads here and have fun. Gone are the days when people just wanted to play games and have fun , instead we waste time arguing on unwanted stuff like drm and exclusive crap.
its not just here , they argue like this on steam forums too, what a waste of time
This is the smartest thing I have read all week. Kudos to you my friend!its not just here , they argue like this on steam forums too, what a waste of time

Pheace: Confused. What Steam Exclusive titles? If they're on Impulse then they are not Steam exclusive. Just because they're not on Gog, does not mean it's Steam Exclusive .
I only meant Steam exclusive games not games that are also on Impulse, although I would like to have Valve games also on GOG. Fallout New Vegas would be an example of Steam exclusive. Fred_DM: ... but SteamWorks IS open to everybody. SteamWorks is not a DRM scheme per se. the DRM only comes from the fact that SteamWorks functions account-based, as does Origin or Battle.net, though the latter does not require its own client.
the whole point of SteamWorks is to provide an all-in-one package for publishers. one account, one multiplayer hub, one distribution channel.
If Steamworks WOULD be open to everybody then why do you still have to use Steam with it? That's what I mean. You could certainly make a game with Steamworks that uses a multiplayerhub and an account and a distribution channel and activation but all operated from another website as Steam. Using Steamworks means you have to use Steam. It's not open. Better would be: you buy a license, you can start your own competition. This will probably not happen. the whole point of SteamWorks is to provide an all-in-one package for publishers. one account, one multiplayer hub, one distribution channel.
Fred_DM: ...
look, if somebody decides to publish exclusively through Steam then that's their choice. ....and you want to tell me selling a game on Steam alone isn't enough?!?
Look, I already said it: they are not interested in competition. Selling a game on Steam alone isn't enough. Exactly what I think. look, if somebody decides to publish exclusively through Steam then that's their choice. ....and you want to tell me selling a game on Steam alone isn't enough?!?
I doubt that it is absolutely no work, although with Baldurs Gate probably next to no work. For other GOG games it requires work.
I am confused now about what I wanted here. So I reread my first post here and can state again:
They have every right to it. However I would really like if every game would be sold in a widest number of places for the sake of competition. The competition is small for Steamworks exclusive titles. I don't like this. I would like for the publishers to show a better attitude and work towards replacing Steamworks by a truly open library, that is compatible with all possible communities and not only the Steam community. Also I fear that the competition against GOG increases so much that the sheer size of Steam kills GOG. However I like it here and will buy games rather here.

One huge advantage I'd expect the Steam version to have over the GOG version would be multi-language support. :-/

SimonG: Have you ever heart the german BG version O_o? It was the horror! THE HORROR! Just saying. I think there might be a lot of German gamers (for example) for whom GOG is not interesting because of the lacking language support. Not everyone likes to play their games in English like we do, and my impression was that these customers might be better catered to by Steam (as much as I hate the thought myself). I know gamers who are aware of Steam but never heard of GOG, but I can't introduce them to GOG because I know they would not be interested in playing games in English.

Ubivis: Hi all,
it seems, that Steam is trying to get into the old game market more and more.
In the Steam Registry, AppID 206180 has been added with the Name: Baldurs Gate
Here is an article about it: http://www.dsogaming.com/news/biowares-classic-baldurs-gate-coming-to-steam/
I will keep buying my old games here!
Hope that isn't true, but won't be surprised as Steam is trying to bite over everything and get control over all digital sales; one of the reasons why I detest steam and won't go near the place. it seems, that Steam is trying to get into the old game market more and more.

I've bought all D&D titles here, and won't buy them on steam if they offered the whole package for 1 cent.

And... you don't think the publishers are equally interested to have their game on Steam? Love how you made Steam sound like the borg, taking over innocent publishers though :)

Maybe I just wanted to play the French one? ;)

I would actually bet money on that the Steam version has no more languages than the GOG version. You are just assuming things about games that are not yet released on said plattform. However if I will be wrong, I will publicly praise Steam and will wish it a long and happy life. :)Maybe I just wanted to play the French one? ;)

Sure, I'm just assuming. :) Maybe I gave Steam undue credit, for a change. (Usually I'm tending more towards the opposite.)

I'm confused why either of you are crediting or discrediting Steam in that regard. Atari will be the one supplying the game, and from the looks of it, they're happy distributing the Gog-ish version.

Actually there is such a case. DotEmu sells a game that is also on here and either the are displaying the supported languages much more careful than here or they actually support more languages, although the initial publisher should be the same. Don't remember the name but if this is of interest I can look it up as a precedent that such things are possible.
For Baldurs Gate it would not be too difficult to store german or other language packs somewhere on copy them over if wished. And I would believe that GOG is quite lazy in this regard. They don't bother much about non-english versions.

Perhaps there are some more publisher pitfalls when it comes to this, local publishing agreements with different publishers perhaps. For Baldurs Gate it would not be too difficult to store german or other language packs somewhere on copy them over if wished.
