What are some examples of remakes done right?

Maybe Monkey Island. Any others?

Syndicate
And here I thought that IWD2 pushed the capabilities of the Infinity Engine about as far as it was possible to go.

I'm a tad skeptical
I'm a skeptic by nature, but after my initial "sacrilege!" impression, the info being divulged actually sounds... not bad. They're keeping 2nd Edition, sticking to 2D isometric, not touching the music, focusing on the PC, working to keep mod compatibility... I don't know, I'm kinda surprised. If the new content is more that just new romance options, it just might turn out to be pretty great.

I just hope that if they eventually do "BG3", they'll stay far away from the previous games and introduce a new story like it was intended with The Black Hound.

They didn't say the new engine will be better than IWD2's...

Tychoxi: I see! "Overhaul Games" huh? Run by ex BioWare people? My expectations just went up a few points.
Trent Oster. i think all the other key Bioware/Black Isle people are still with Bioware and Obsidian.

spindown: Syndicate
Yeah this is why I'm worried. Syndicate went from RTS to FPS. Does a similar fate lie ahead for Baldur's Gate?

what makes you say that? no new BG game is planned. the remake will be based on the same old engine, with the same ruleset. it'll be mostly the same game it used to be.
You know if they could change one thing I'd like to be able to shift the rules set. An optional (upon new game creation - one time choice only per game) chance to change the base DnD rules being used.

It would be rather fun to get to use the Neverwinter Nights ules engine or even the Icewind Dale engines in the game. Granted balance might be a little broken using other than the original, but it would be fun to add a new way to play without having to change masses of the games core content.

*admits that 90% of the reason for this is being able to have wizard familiars that are worth something and don't kill 1 constitution point when killed -- esp since a rabbit -- can't do anything worth doing!!*
There are lots of little oversights in the final official releases, like broken quest rewards and dialogue trees, broken rules, that kind of thing. Fan patches fixed almost all of the most noticeable, but fixing them at the source isn't a bad thing.

I just wish they could do something about the pathfinding AI. That's the series' biggest weakness by far.

I would laugh so hard at that announcement... "A new Baldur's Gate is coming! There will be only one minor change, to modernize the antiquated gameplay: it will be an action-oriented FPS..."

nijuu: Not excited. Dont see the point to it. Leave the wonderful original be.Reboots/reskinned can go get farked. Btw i thought all the original team were either working for Bioware or with Obsidian ?
Personally I love remasters like the Monkey Island SEs and the recent list of console HD re-releases. The classics you love, looking better than ever.

That said adding new content is a little suspect.
Personally I'd settle for re-releases that just fix errors with modern graphics cards. Many older games are great, but suffer from videos that don't run (codex no longer default supported) or screen flickers or abnormal display errors - or just flat out won't work.

I can honestly see that in 5 or less years time the sale of oldschool computers made with old graphics cards (or the sale of them for running on modern machines) will be a viable option for a niche gamer company - esp with services like GoG* promoting the selling of older titles.

* GoG looks prettier than GOG....
Sweet!! I cant wait for " Baldurs Gate.... The Musical "
