dirtyharry50: Are they actually enhancing the graphics and sound in this edition? They ought to be for what they are charging.
They wanted to, but they can't; I think it was Trent Oster himself who admitted in an interview that they lost the original source files for the art for BG, BG2, and ToSC/ToB; which means that all of the art is just going to be upscaled for high/widescreen resolutions; none of the art is going to be redone to be in high-res - which is a major point against the EE release.

Ehhhh, so what exactly has been "enhanced"? Native widescreen support without needing to use a weidu patch, and some extra content?

StingingVelvet: $20 is steep considering on PC all they are selling is the added content. I wouldn't mind messing with those new characters but I'm not paying $20 to do it.

Jaime: Oh yes, you will! I'm pretty sure this is an attempt to test the waters for the demand for a new Infinity Engine game, or some kind of Baldur's Gate 3 kickstarter or something like that. Everybody will buy at least one copy, I command it.
Meh... I'd rather see new engines and looks to this classic style, like Dead State.
avatar
Gazoinks: Anyway, literally no desire to get this for PC, but it's a bit tempting to acquire it on iPad.
avatar
Jaime: What does that mean, you're "a bit tempted"? I said it was a command!

If this thing fails, you will all suffer my terrrible wrath! Or at least pitiful whining.
Look, I hate to be a wet blanket about such a good game (well, it's a hair overrated, but still damned good), but this is the shittiest "reboot"/enhancement/whatever I've seen in awhile. Seriously, they didn't soup this thing up at all hardly. One whole new dungeon? Aren't there 100 dungeons with mods? Hell, can't I just throw another 1000 up in NWN and play D&D until my eyes explode?

They should have just called it the "mobile version" and simply released this for mobile, that's basically what they were trying to do anyway. Asking PC players to pay 20 bucks for this is a laugh, we all have our old copies, douche bags, for that matter we have our GOG copies as well.

Okay, I'm a bit disappointed and bitter this only amounted to this, though I suspected it would be the case all along.

Meh. I'll wait until they eventually realise they need to sell it elsewhere too. I swore a long time ago that I'd never touch Beamdog again. And I'm sticking to that.

On the whole, that's a helluva lot better idea, yeah.

They do lay out some aspects of the "400+ improvements", but it doesn't sound like anything that we already don't have from the excellent fix and tweak packs that the community has built. The only clear difference I can see is that they'll be shipping an Intel-native Mac binary built to run on OS X (as opposed to running the Windows version in WINE or the original OS 9 version in Emulation).

It's pretty clear that this isn't so much an "MDK2HD-style" rerelease so much as it is a port of the game to iOS, specifically the iPad. Desktop users are secondary. It's too bad, as what I'd want to see is a cross-platform Mac/Windows/Linux release from the start.
I can see how this wouldn't appeal to much for a PC user.

On the other hand as a Mac user I am happy about it being native and supporting widescreen plus the other enhancements. I'm disappointed they lost the original assets that prevent them from beautifying the game some but oh, well. I think it still looks nice anyway.

This is also very, very cool if you own an iPad of course.

But yeah, this is a pretty tough sell to PC users.
I want to see some gameplay videos, not trailers of such... Just some guy fighting and looting and talking.

Some of the screenshots look to have post processing effects added. At least the blue stone with gold trim UI is finally confirmed.
Based on the responses on this thread I have decided that Baldur's Gate will be a failure.

I assume that people who like good old games would certainly be a big part of the target audience for this game. If they aren't interested, who will be?

Personally, Baldur's Gate (original) is on my backlog of games (and has been for a while) and I will be playing that rather then getting the enhanced edition. I never really got past the mid 90s in terms of rpgs but am looking forward to trying some newer games out.
Baldurs Gate was probably the worst candidate to do such a thing. The game itself hasn't really stood the test of time. And those who might buy it out of nostalgia will rather buy the GOG version.
I got the whole D&D Anthology pack on Gamersgate for something like $5. Haven't touched it, probably never will...

That said, I like the idea of updating classic games to make them compatible with newer systems while adding some light graphical or content updates. As long as the originals are also available, more power to them.

ktchong: http://www.baldursgate.com/

It has loads of new contents.
It has been online for half a year.

Also I don't want to use a new site to buy games, insane or not. Sick of new sites and new accounts. It says no client required (though the launcher still has DRM surely), but still... meh.
Although I also find its price too high but you don't only pay for some additional content only. The have rewritten the UI, now you can even zoom in and out, and added many enhancements. Also that added content is about 18 hours long which is lot.

No, only the interface hasn't aged well and now that's fixed. And honestly, you need to use mods to make the GOG version playable unless you like pain.

Personally I would wait to see if they also would release the second game including the option to make a big Baldurs Gate game. Depending how well they've done the engine rework and how well the new material is included the starting price is ok, but I'm sure it will not take three months and we will see it much cheaper floating around. Btw, any news about drm?

Edit: Ah, I see the launcher has maybe drm included. It's a beamdog only game for the start. So I'm out and hope thanks to Atari involved it will be released maybe a year later somewhere else.

A couple of tweets from Trent Osters account :

"Trent Oster ‏@TrentOster
I like Steam, but our biz deal is for an exclusive launch. So we sell through Beamdog and deliver direct, similar to Blizzard on Starcraft2

Trent Oster ‏@TrentOster
With a purchase through Beamdog, you will get a launcher app which checks for updates, then launches the game and shuts down. No client.

The only way to totally beat piracy is to mimic Diablo3 and make an online service. I'd rather put the effort into the game.

*iPad* DLC. On PC/Mac, you get it all."
