OK so AVG did its usual daily check and keeps coming up with viruses and trojans in places that have been there for ages and not used IE NWN2 (no activity in 11 months)

However I just made sure Norton 360 was fully up to date and ran its comprehensive scan. and it found 12 cookies and none of what AVG flagged up, (I had AVG ignore them)

Am I just getting false positives or whatever, whats going on???

PS: I know this is the 3rd topic ive made in 6 hours but this one is actually computer related.

Wait for an update. Maybe they messed things up again.

Or you could get an antivirus that doesn't suck. :P

I do think that if you're getting this it's time to move to Avast! or some other antivirus.

Which on sucks though AVG or Norton 360 :-P How is Avast, I have about 6 months left on Norton 360 and I dont really want to buy another AV with that outstanding.

I was talking about AVG. Speaking from experience.

I moved to Avast (which is FREE) and haven't had a single issue since.

Go with MSE if you don't want to give money for an antivirus.

AVG has really been on the decline for a while, and I'd definitely attribute this to them screwing things up with an update. My advice: switch to MSE.

It's great, I installed it and turned on silent/gaming mode, and have only heard from it once since, and that was because I was trying to find some No-CD crack or something and download the shadiest thing imaginable. Was totally dumb of me, but Avast!'s intervention convinced me that it was working well. You know, it's hard to say with antiviruses, because I barely even feel like I need one, so I don't "use" it, I just install and let it do its thing...

Yes, MSE. Well, its either that, or pay for NOD32. I wouldn't recommend any other antivirus.

Whenever i need to check a pc for malware infections, i use the following free software combination:

Avira Antivir Personal.
Malwarebytes Anti-malware
Super AntiSpyware

They are light on resources, have very fast scanners, great detection rates, and behave well together.

I have used them extensively for over two years. And at one time removing over 1200 malware objects (yes thats right 1200 trojans, viruses, worms) on a friends computer.

I am not saying that there aren´t other great programs out there, just that they very well rounded and produce very good results when it comes to malware removal.

Whatever solution you decide to use just make sure there is only one real time protection module running or you can have some serious performance issues and possible detection conflicts.

The same happened to me.

AVG went crazy over a few files that have been forever on this PC, some of them from gog games. It even deleted one or two files from Spellforce's Platinum game folder.

Needless to say the exceptions list got a whole lot bigger.

Uninstall AVG. Install Microsoft Security Essentials.

Trust me on this.

I switched to MSE a while back, and run it along with immunet protect. Haven't had too much trouble, although immunet protect is a bit over zealous at times.
