Gamespot's Article on Eyefinity
ATI's upcoming card, the Eyefinity is capable of playing games using six monitors at once. Meaning that overall resolution can go as high as 7680x3200.
So it seems like ATI think that everyone has multiple monitors. Or at least should do. I don't know about you guys, but the idea of playing games with massive breaks in the image seems more like a detraction than a benefit.
While a larger screen wouldn't hurt, I find this multiple monitor idea to be more of an attempt to 'progress' for the sake of it. Without really thinking about the practical applications or the size of the market you'd be targeting with such tech.

I don't plan on getting more than ONE monitor.

I have two 20-inch Dells, but I rarely use the second one because it really eats up small Ikea desk space. So I only pull it out when I'm either playing a game that really benefits from large screens (like Supreme Commander).

I can see the advantage it would have for people who want to multitask and use more than one application at the same time on the same computer. But for gaming it would just be crap. Personally, I wasn't too fond of the hairlines that divided my old CRT. So multiple monitors just seem out of the question to me.

It would make more sense if the game properly supported multiple monitors. Like the DS does. That way you could set up multiple views for each screen. So you could have one fully zoomed out, viewing the whole battlefield and another focussing on what you're presently commanding.

Having one screen just for maps was pretty cool in itself though.

You'd definitely need to be willing to throw a lot of money at gaming. Given the current recession, that makes it a bad time to consider such possibilities.
Still, I'm sure the card can do phenomenal things with a single screen too.

Yeah, one large monitor is way better than a bunch of smaller ones. Once you have one large enough to fill your field of view from your desired viewing distance, I don't see the point.
Maybe if you had 6 keyboards and 6 people to go along with all those monitors. ;)

That's what I meant. In SupComm the fully zoomed out view basically is a full screen map.

That's what they should have aimed for here: replacing LAN gaming with a single computer. It would certainly solve issues with companies removing LAN support from their games. Hell, that's actually a much better idea than the one ATI had, I'll say that.

Yes, they're owned by AMD.
And yes, THEY still exist too.

In all fairness, ATI & AMD are actually pretty competitive at their price points. But I suppose most people will pay the extra for the performance Intel and nVidia offer. It's certainly not like ATI/AMD are going to be leading the pack any time soon. They seem pretty resigned to that.

Would be nice for games that would benefit from multi-monitors. Any simulation game (cars/ships/space), could take good advantage, or something where additional 'non-critical' info can be displayed instead of opening a new window in game to view stats/screens.
I hope it's something that can be taken advantage of (but not required) rather than a solution looking for a problem.
