In this weekend promo we decided to gather a group of [url=http://www.gog.com/en/promo/assorted_games]assorted classics where everyone can find something for their taste. Until Monday, February 28 at 11:59 p.m. EDT the loot seekers can grab Arx Fatalis for $3.59, blood thirsty fans of carnage will probably go for POSTAL: Classic and Uncut for $3.59 and POSTAL 2 Complete for $5.99, while armchair generals will pick either the medieval themed for $3.59 and [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/stronghold_crusader]Stronghold Crusader for $5.99 or the brain-twisting The Incredible Machine Mega Pack for $5.99. You have to agree there's a whole lot of diversity in this offer. The promo is not a bundle one, so you'll receive the 40% discount if you buy one, two or all the games from the offer.
I miss only Arx Fatalis from these, however I don't feel like buying it.
I only have Arx from this collection, and can confirm with the latest patch, I am having no issues running it under Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Before the patch had numerous saving / Fatal Memory error bugs and crashes.

LordCinnamon: OK, someone help me out here with Stronghold and Stronghold: Crusader. Are there reasons to prefer one over the other?
They are set in different settings (Europe-><-Middle East).
Additionally, Stronghold is mostly a long campaign while Crusader is all about skirmish battles (even the "warpath" mode, which serves as a sort of campaign mode, is a long (and I mean it!) series of skirmish battles without any real coherence). You have a "free build" option in both games, though, which is a real sandbox.
There are also more characters (to serve as allies/enemies) in Crusader.
Personally, I prefer Crusder over the origninal, but your mileage may vary.
Excellent timing on the Stronghold deal. Giant Bomb just did a Quick Look Throwback recently, and several members wanted to find a copy that would work on their PCs.
... currently trying my Arx Fatalis hard copy with the last patch and win7, it runs fine so far.

Wow! I had forgotten how it feels great to draw the signs for spells with the hand (mouse) in the air and hear your character pronounce the name of the symbol at the same time. Excellent spell casting system. Everyone should experience it, it's pure fun.
Does anyone know how the gameplay in the Stronghold games compares to Castles?
http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/castles_castles_2

The first Castles is the castle-building/defense game that I remember from my youth and I had a lot of fun building castles there. Are the Stronghold games in a similar vein or something else entirely?

And that´s why I am buying it NOW!
Bought Arx Fatalis, wasn't bothered about the Postal games. The others I don't know much about. So will leave them for now. Thank you for the weekend promo GOG!
Eh, in for the Incredible Machine games.

Maybe Arx Fatalis too.

thanks! I went for SH:Crusader, since I don't really care much about the campaign anyway and like the graphics in Crusader better.

Hmm I had held off buying these (I like to replace my physical copies) but I had Stronghold Deluxe and figured it wasn't the same as Stronghold that GOG sells. But according to http://www.gog.com/en/forum/stronghold_series/difference_between_normal_and_deluxe_versions it is so I'm very tempted now.

Shame there is no official support for Windows 7 with Stronghold crusader

I was thinking the exact same thing :P
Great promo, but nothing interesting for me that I don't already have (Arx Fatalis)
I like this type of promo and bought Arx fatalis.
high rated
I've had some issues recently with Arx Fatalis 1.21 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with an Nvidia GTX460 card.
I was still getting the fatal memory error, and also often had stuttering during melee combat.

Finally got it to run pretty well, even faster framerates:

Set your Arx exe to Windows 98/ME compatibility mode

Go into your Nvidia control panel and set the following:

Maximium pre-rendered frames = 8 (I really found this smoothed out my framerate a LOT)
Multi-display/mixed-GPU accel = Compatibility Performance mode
Power management mode = Prefer maximum (not sure if this really helps but why not)
Texture filtering - Negative LOD bias = Clamp (when this was ON my stat numbers disappeared!)
Threaded optimization = On

I can't do 1680x1050 in Windows 98 compatibility mode, but the game runs really smooth now where before it was not getting the best framerate even after the 1.21 patch.

I attached an image of my Nvidia control panel settings.

This game is rad, I hope everyone can enjoy it!
