captfitz: That's kinda funny, because when people are pirating the game, it's quite obvious that the DRM doesn't work. In that light, the statement "this is why we have DRM" is pretty stupid. But then again, publishers never seems to have any rational statements to come in this regard.
But as for myself and this game; I'll probably borrow the PS3 version from a friend.

Well, they usually say that without the DRM, the number of people pirating would have been a lot bigger, and theat their DRM reduced the number of pirate copies. Pretty stupid argument though.
Don't care. Already got my platinum trophy for this game a few days into january :P

Platinum trophy = you have the PS3 version = you have no reason to care about how shitty the PC version is.

True. I tend to like third person action games with a joypad.
Ubisoft is not going to be pissed about this, and I've stated why in the past.
To them, this just shows them despite whatever level of DRM is placed within a game released for the PC, hackers will break it fast. With that, they can abandon PC gaming as a whole, using the excuse: Hey, we tried, PC gaming is just too full of piracy for us to actually make money, whereas consoles, piracy is harder and less rampant.
Oh, and lets also consider this: Ubisoft puts quite possibly the most draconian version of DRM in their game, (even tho MMO's have the same thing, but single player games are different) alienating almost every gamer on the PC that HATES DRM. So the tons of gamers boycott the game, and only a handful will buy it. Then, the pirates pirate the game, so Ubisoft can again say that they aren't making money with the PC and abandon it.

Most games on PC now support the 360 pad where applicable. And many cases where it's not applicable too (like FPS). But yes, if I was inclined to get the game at all and had a PS3, I'd buy it for that too. But there's no way Ubisoft are getting my money for any new game while this bullshit prevails.

Yeah I'm with you all the way. Actually I just wanted a game to play around the christmas hollidays. If had known.. :P

Which is bullshit on both counts (for everything except the PS3). That won't stop them using that 'excuse' though.

Yeah, Ubisoft weren't looking so bad back then. In fact they'd stripped the DRM from Far Cry 2 and not included it at all in many others like PoP, Endwar and... that other one. But sometimes that's the problem with adopting one extreme standpoint without a good foothold - it just makes swinging to the other all the more likely.

I didn't say it would be a valid excuse, I just said it would be their excuse. But think about it, they can restrict piracy on Xbox 360 by banning hacked consoles from Xbox Live, which almost always forces those gamers to buy another one. As far as PS3 goes, despite me having one, I've heard nothing about piracy on the PS3, either because not many people do it or it just doesn't happen, I just don't know.
What can ubisoft do about piracy on the PC? Absolutely nothing. From their standpoint, they can save money by exclusively developing for consoles and not having to spend money for porting. Just you wait, give it 2-3 more years (maybe less) before Ubisoft completely abandons PC.

I know. I've heard the same bullshit from publishers before.

Does it? I would have thought only the more stupid ones were using a gold account in the first place. It's like trying to get on the official servers with a cracked PC game - dumb. Very dumb.

It's so costly it wouldn't be worth it. You're so much better off just buying the games that if anyone's bothered to crack it they've wasted their time.

You can't stop piracy. But you can lessen it.
- Don't make the version you're selling more annoying than a completely DRM-free pirated version. If there has to be DRM then make it transparent, like GOO.
- Sell at a reasonable price. The cheaper it is the more people will be inclined to buy it. This especially pays off with digital copies thanks to the lack of overheads.
- Instead of using copy protection, use incentives such as patches, technical support and free DLC only to users who authenticate their copies.
Well, the problem with your idea is it makes sense, so the odds of Ubisoft using it are slim and none.

They've already released games DRM-free just recently. Many publishers make use of digital distribution sites to sell games in sales at extremely cheap prices. Although most seem to be under the unfortunate impression that digital copies are worth more. EA have already tried the authentication incentives with Mass Effect which seemed like a good idea to me and is why I listed it. Unfortunately their DLC policy with ME2 wasn't so great.
But, all in all, it shows that publishers are willing to try these methods. It's just a matter of them coordinating their strategy rather than appearing like a confused erratic mess, like Ubisoft has been.
There is a cracked version of Silent Hunter V out there too.

Err no, it just doesn't affect you directly. Thats like saying I can't care about the Chilean earthquake because I live in Australia. I'm pretty pissed about this thing because the PC is a great gaming platform that has some serious issues that the powers that be are only going to make worse with kneejerk heavy handed bullshit like this. It has the potential to have devastating effects on a platform I care about.

Probably something to do with dual layer blu ray blanks costing half the price of the game so you might as well get the proper version. It does happen but its apparently a bit harder than the other platforms and pirates seem to be lazy bastards by nature so are more likely to focus on the 360 version
