So, recently I've dipped my toe into the MMO world. Played a bit of Rift and some Neverwinter. At this point I'm a little more partial to Neverwinter, but not for any specific reason other than I like the look of it a bit more. Any way, I've been happily smashing along, not getting myself killed and there are certain areas where you can help others out without actually being on a 'team'. I like doing that. I run in, smash some heads, and head off on my merry way without waiting around for thanks like a super hero.

Well, today I got a friend request and I was...well, I'm not sure. I didn't want to be rude. But at the same time, I didn't really want to commit to the whole friend thing either. I mean, I don't really know the other person and, frankly, I'm socially inept even by internet standards.

So, I guess I'm asking those steeped in the MMO culture, what's they typical protocol? Accet the request and hope they don't expect me to actually be very social? Just flat out tell them if they want a friend to buy a dog?

Don't think it has escaped me that I'm saying I have a social quandry based on a platform that is by its nature supposed to be social. I just feel really ambivalent about this kind of stuff and could use some feedback/opinions.

Accept it, it doesn't really mean anything.
It must be Flanders trolling you. :P
I am very much in the same boat socially, and I really enjoy several MMOs. I do tend to play solo or just with my wife (she plays Neverwinter with me), and it's always awkward for me when I get a friend request at random. I've found that for me, the best thing to do is just explain I'm mainly looking to solo but that I appreciate the gesture. I tell people all the time that I'm just not one to party up and play in groups, and figure people will accept that.
So far it's worked fine (I'm the same way with party invites and guild invites usually as well)
A friend request usually doesn't mean all that much. I mostly see it as a contact list, and I think most people do too. Though you do occasionally end up adding very social people who'll often initiate conversations out of the blue and ask if you want to party up for some thing or another.

If that bothers you, then it's a good idea to be careful about who you add as a friend.

A guild invite on the other hand is an entirely different matter and can come with a lot of baggage. Personally I can't join a guild unless I already know (and like) at least some of the people that are in it.

Accept the friend request. They can teach you all kinds of juicy secrets, like how to better build your character, the best grinding spots, cool gear setups, etc. not to mention you'll have an in for world events and clan actions you might not have known about without those contacts. They might throw you free items and gold, and you might enjoy throwing other people free items and gold too (you seem to enjoy hosting giveaways on GOG, it's like the same thing!) Like running in and saving the day? Imagine your friend sent you an urgent message for HELP! And the satisfaction of finding him and pulling his ass out of the fryer. Friends are a big part of the fun in an MMO
Appreciate the input, folks. I accepted the invitation. Maybe it really is just Falanders trolling me. :-)

Neverwinter? I think friends requests in MMOs are harmless so I'd accept. It usually means, they just want to play with you. :)
