Hi! I really want to get Arx Fatalis and I was expecting that it would be on sale with the Summer Deal, but I see that its price is not reduced from $5.99, which I think is a little bit high for a game that old.

Do you know why some games like this one are not included in the promotion?

Bye!
Why? I can't say I know why a particular game is not included, but it is consistent with past sales not to have absolutely everything on sale at once. However, absolutely everything does eventually go on sale if you wait. I too am waiting for the next Arx Fatalis promo, and I regret passing it up last time it was on sale.

I can't even remember when the last time Arx Fatalis was on sale. =(
Something to do with Arcane Studios, presumably?
It's probably better if you don't judge the sale price based on how old the game is. There are games older than Arx Fatalis that are selling for $10.

I'm just guessing that GOG.com prices their games based on a few factors:
1. Publisher recommended price (maybe a minimum price)
2. How popular the game is.
3. How often the game is purchased.

I price hotel rooms for a living, so this is just a hunch of what I'd base it on.
I can personally say that Arx Fatalis is totally worth it at $5.99 and would be totally worth it if it was $9.99. Fantastic game!

Really? Far out. I'm an innkeeper. Do me a favor and tell Yahoo that B&Bs and hotels do NOT use the same pricing structure! They are seriously pissing me off with that. :D

This^

Great game, not my preferred genre, but I can recognize a good game when I see it.
The game is best played in the "Arx Libertatis" source-port. The old engine is clunky and glitchy and there's no reason not to take advantage of the fact that the game had it's source-code released.

Within last year, as I have it and I wouldn't have bought it outside a promo.

Just to mention it: one still needs the original game files. But you're right. When getting Arx Fatalis it is worth getting Arx Libertatis along with it.

*rolls eyes with incredible enthusiasm*
I owned and played Arx years ago, within a year or two after release. The first six levels were beautifully done, and I remember them fondly. The last two levels were unpopulated, incomplete, and frustratingly buggy. Every operation required reloads and multiple attempts, and in the end I needed a walkthrough just to confirm that even obvious steps were correct, as they would fail so many times before working properly.

Is it still the disaster it once was? If the last levels have been cleared up, I'm happy to buy it from GOG and play through again. But if not, it remains a horrendous game-- doubly so for beginning with so much promise.

edit: Most of it did make me really happy, though. Maybe that's why the last quarter upset me so.

There is a very popular "mod" for it called Arx Libertatis which removes most bugs (along with a modern patch introduced in the GOG release) and makes some nice changes to the game so it feels more modern.

I don't think they changes anything inside the game though, such as NPC placement.
No one, well one person did kind of, has jumped on the OP for equating age with value. Last time someone did that we almost dragged the poor guy out and lynched him. :P I'm torn. The good aspect is that it shows a higher level of maturity on our part. The bad aspect is that I hate fuckin' maturity.
