Has anyone played Armada 2526? And what are your opinions?

I love Turn Based Strategy. I loved Masters Of Orion (not 3, but who did?). I love science fiction games. But I also love solid gameplay.

Do you recommend this game?

I have played it. However as I haven't bought the expansion, I can't tell you much about any improvement brought by Supernova.

I honnestly found that game to be... bland. Mainly because of its boring tech tree and of its combat combat module. The strategic map is functionnal and there are a few very good ideas like the way strategic move can be automated, but the tactical side is puzzling. A big "minus" for me is the lack of control on your ship's specs and weapon loadout. Meaning there is no way to adapt your fleet to your playing style or to the peculiarities of your ennemies. And there is very little logic in the way your ships actually performs. For instance carriers and their fighterwings seem uneffective against defense bases.

In the end, vastly inferior to Space Empire V or even MOO 2

Thanks for the reply.

I'm glad I asked then because based on what you've said, I too would get frustrated by a lack of customization features. Seeing as it is priced at about $30, I'll likely wait.

I should probably get Space Empire V, now that you mention it.

Unfortunately there haven't been a lot of good 4Xs in the last few years.

Despite being 5 years old, SE V remains a solid bet. Slightly inferior to SE IV Deluxe in terms of gameplay, but with improved graphics and a better interface

You could check Star Ruler too. (http://starruler.blind-mind.com/). Things have improved a lot since the initial release. You can get it for around 10 USD on Gamersgate f.i.

Star Ruler is ok, but lacks personality.

You should give Distant Worlds a try. It's easily one of the best 4x games I've ever played.

I just hope you don't mind top-down 2D.

If it's customization you want, I recommend Imperium Galactica 2, if you can find it. Sadly, I don't know where that might be. I'm hoping it'll show up here on GOG someday.
Let me put ut this way: MOO2 is MUCH better than Armada 2526. Like, a LOT better.

If you want an innovative, good, recent 4X game, go with Distant Worlds. It's a much better game in pretty much everything.
