You see, people complain about generic fantasy settings with the same old Elves, Dwarves and Magic, but when a developer actually tries to tackle an interesting and completely unused setting for a computer game, people get all retarded because it isn't familiar, calling it "racist" and other rubbish.

The critics in that article do not mention wanting elves or magic in their games and the university professor is right, if they'd provided a possibility to play as part of the indigenous population, they could have avoided a lot of the inflamed opinions.

Since I haven't played the game, I can't offer an opinion on the content, but the reason I have been hesitant to buy it is all due to the topic of colonization and whether the game handles that in a way I can stomach.

Indeed, they should be glad that a game brings attention to this grim history.

As it is, your main crew will come from Spain, they can be religious, greedy, altruistic, racist, or openminded etc, there's all sorts of characters and it's your choice what you take with you. As well as when you arrive in Mexico, you can go all conqueror, buy you can also go the peaceful route and work with the natives as peacefully as you can (they have their own war going). There's also 5 natives you can recruit along the way.

Isn't Sid Meier's Colonization (and its Civ 4 expansion remake) guilty of much the same thing, only with the indigenous people of North America rather than south though? No one ever complained about them AFAIK...

Exactly, I'd be much more upset about a game that just hides the atrocities from the player giving him the impression that they never happened.

Yes, and that's why I haven't played those either, but this discussion is good; I think I'm going to pick up Expeditions: Conquistador so I can see what the execution is like. Also, the article said that the game would be used in the South American Studies program to discuss colonialism, which I think shows that this game and gaming in general is having a good influence.

Well, it's not exactly historically accurate though, bit under half the companions are female and there's just stuff like Aztec shamans who can cast curses on your party. The writing is very nice though and it allows you to roleplay pretty much how you like

Let me get this straight... people are complaining that a game with a histroically authentic setting is... historically authentic!? How dare they? Impale them on wooden stakes and burn them publically, then drown them in boiling acid! (in that order)

Seriously though, I'm disgusted by this constant whitewashing of history. unless the game is glorifying the conquistadors are "tamers of the unwashed filthy primitives" or something along those lines I don't see the problem. That's simply the way history happened, whether you like it or not. Reminds me of the stupid censoring of classic literature in schools in the US, i don't know if they actually went through with this. It's much easier to just ignore issues than face them and educate children properly about the ugly sides of history.

As I stated elsewhere, I really like this game a lot ... once I got passed the reviews and opinions. When I first heared about the racist aspect of the game I was wondering 'WTF is dat schiste ?'. You actually have to taste the game to get the flavour. So I'm really not surprised that this game is 'checked for ban' in some areas.

Does this game get its facts right ? Is it morally straight ? Clearly not, but then we're talking about a distopian-ish videogame ...

Bottom line, I would understand this game being banned ... however foolish that may be.
