I am waiting with tempered excitement. The demo is not promising, but RPS insists that the game gets better.

I'll likely get it, but I am going to probably wait for a decent price drop.

anjohl: If you pay them for it, you fit into their economic projections either way.
There's a big difference between them getting their cut from $59.99 as opposed to their cut from $9.99 (or less). Thus, their increasing of the base price here to get extra profit from me, has backfired. They will now get significantly less and will have to wait significantly longer for it.
I know a friend liked the demo, but until I get Win7 the game is a no go for me.
I'm excited for it as well, may be one of the few games in the last years that I will pre-order (still trying to find the SE here, else I'll be getting it from Game it seems).
As for all of you who complain about the demo, let me once again point you here.
First mission will be the same (almost always), but for the second mission, replace the current enemies with Sectoid Commanders, Heavy Floaters and Ethereals, crank the difficulty to Classic (from easy that it currently is), change your weapons to laser, and try to survive. The demo is more or less a benchmark, not a proper demo, but the game does seem good. If only we could sack the Second in Command, we may have been able to survive the first mission without casualties...
Is there a way to capture a thin man in the second mission? The doctor recommended us to capture an alien, but I could not figure out to capture one without a stun gun.

Not to my knowledge. The 2 missions in the demo are the first 2 of the 4 tutorial missions, and they are giving you more or less the info you'll be using later on. The doctor will always recommend capturing an alien you are seeing for the first time, even if you can't at that time.

At first I thought the game was pretty easy, but hey, first mission, tutoral. The I changed the difficulty to classic and lost the first mission in 2 turns. I like it!
My only gripe is the change from time units to 2 actions in general, but I'm also a boardgame fan and I've seen this done in some boardgames too and it worked. Didn't make the game any less strategic.

What I wonder though, since you don't really have much control over the layout of your base, will there be battles in your base?

As far as I recall reading, there won't be any Base Defense missions :( Not really sure if the control you have over the layout is less or not, since there does seem to be quite a bit of facility interaction, mostly concerning adjacent positions. So you will need to thoroughly plan your base, especially since you can't have everything (for now at least).
~10 more days, good thing we do have carmageddon to pass the time :P

SimonG: While I'm not blown away by the demo, I will buy it probably in the next month.

As it is a Steamworks title I can get it very cheap on Amazon or a UK site, and Xenonauts still isn't final, so it has little competition.

Be honest, I could list all of the shortcomings and in the end it is still a X-COM game. Made by Firaxis no less.

For better or worse, it will be a must play for everybody who even glanced sideways at a tactical game in the last twenty years.
yeah i have had xenonaughts for a while really like where its going purchased it before XCOM was even announced do quite like the alpha build although last 1 i played was 10 wanted to leave the rest as a surprise for when they finish it.

So they are hoping for X sales at full retail price, Y sales at 3/4's of that, Z sales at half, etc. You are still fitting into their business plan. I am not telling you to pirate it, I am just saying your protest is ineffective.

Since when is that a bad thing? A company invests millions of dollars in providing me with a great game. A game many of us have been waiting to years. And now they want to get paid for that. Which I will gladly do. Because I can't create such a game. And considering that I will probably buy it for less than the price of a lunch, I don't feel cheated. Especially as the game lasts a lot longer than lunch (unless it's mexican).

This whole "publishers are our enemies" is childish, immature and one of the reasons the industry isn't taking gamers seriously. And how can blame them, with posts like this.
I am looking forward to it. In fact, it's the only game I am looking forward to now. It looks like it didn't loose any of the spirit of it's ancestor, it has a welcome modern touch to it, but the core game remains the same. Freaking awesome same.

I don't treat publishers as my enemy, I treat them as soulless, automated corporations seeking to increase profitability as much as possible, which is what they are.

It is way easier than the original game for sure. I'd recommend starting from Veteran difficulty for people who are...veterans to the series.

But evil publishers are our enemies, along with evil goverment and generally evil people that are in places of power and, more importantly, have more money than we do!
