keeveek: In Polish calling you male or female is equal to compare you to animals. It's not depressing. It's LANGUAGE. Same difference as "body" or "carcass". In some languages some words are limited to animals only.
Dude, what you're saying doesn't make any sense. First you explain that we have multiple words for "male" and "female" but then you stick to only one possible translation to make your point. :P

The translation is made only to fit Polish language. you know, in english it's male or female both for animals and people. We have a different word for animals and a different one for people.
Here's the biggest difference, I'd say. You can use one word to describe both animals and people as "samiec and samica" but that would be found offensive.

CaptainGyro: people get offended being called male or female? I find that kinda depressing
avatar
F4LL0UT: My ex hated it when I addressed her as "woman". Yeah, some people are strange.
That's perfectly understandable, actually. Addressing a person by their gender is offensive. If you know a person you should use their name, and if you don't you should just say "Excuse me, but..." or something like that.

My biggest issue with female / woman is that people use them incorrectly. In English 'female' is an adjective, so saying 'female gamers' is correct usage, but the thread title is incorrect. 'Are there any women on here?" would be correct.

Adzeth: I'd be like super happy if people started saying men and women instead of male and female. I knew this one guy who kept calling women "naaras" (female) and it was so creepy that it makes me lose faith in humanity. Is there even a reason to use male/female as nouns?
No. No, there is not. The only excuse is ignorance, which is unfortunately widespread.

In the US it's actually not always polite to use male / female to refer to humans. It varies by region and social setting

No. Female is also a noun

CaptainGyro: No. Female is also a noun
And some women are nuns.

Just take for granted that anyone putting a pony as their avatar is a male in his 20's.

Anyway, I find it easier to just consider people online as genderless. It means that I don't have to worry about things like gender roles & the expectations that comes with those.

Yet abstract avatars like ktchong's are perfectly OK... :/

That is not an abstract avatar. My profile picture is the universal symbol of Atheism. Here is a tidbit: the insignia of the United Federation of Planets from Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek universe was based on that symbol.

Atheism's got a symbol? Well I guess that elevates it to a proper religious status then.
Universal symbol of atheism? Sounds like some kind of religion!

Apple, Amnesty International, American Red Cross, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Harvard University, the IMF, the United Nations, the World Bank, University of California in Los Angeles, etc., they all have symbols as well. Does that make them into religion organization as well?
