BlueMooner: Do you believe in unicorns? No? That means you have a religion then, right, about denying unicorns?
avatar
Immoli: And he better be damn well prepared to provide proof and evidence that unicorns do not exist.
They do, all you gotta do is glue a makeshift horn on a horse and BAM a unicorn ;)

Fenixp: I think that if you want religion to die off, your answer to the question "Do you think god exists?" should not be "No," but "I don't care." No starts discussion. It spawns more believers that are forced to take one side of the barricade. "I don't care" is very easy to slip into for anyone, just as we don't really care about presence of lizardpeople on earth, and it's not one of the 'extreme' stances, which both need some sort of proof. You can't, with certanity, say that god exists. You can't say he doesn't. What you can say is that you're not really interested, because it's pointless to venture out and discuss something that can't be discussed on any proper basis. edit: I do think that there's a reason why most of Czech republic is not religious. Because people here usually don't care either way and see no point in discussing it or even thinking about it.
First off, the question "Do you think god exists?" can't even be defined as "god" can't be defined in relation to "exisiting" (or much else, for that matter). Thus any answer is at a minimum as meaningless as the question. Do you think the colour of rejection is F sharp?

Second, any wish for religion to "die off" is unrelated to being an atheist. One one hand you could say atheists (along with the rest of the world) would benefit greatly by religion being downplayed, but on the other hand, there are so many ways for an atheist to prey on the religious it's just silly. Of course, if religious beliefs could've been defined to a certain degree of accuracy, it'd be another matter, but the way it is it's like stealing candy from a dead toddler - people will kill themselves for their god if properly motivated.

Let's say that when it comes to religion you have the following types: The +1's are those who believe in a god, the -1's are those who deny the existence of any god, and the 0's are those who don't care. Now, which one in this set {-1, 0, +1} is the atheist? None of them; the atheist is the empty set { } (or Ø if you like). The "religious value" of an atheist is neither -1 nor 0; it's NULL.

Not being able to prove god exists is no more supportive of the hypothesis that god does exists than not being able to prove the (non-)existence of the invisble pink unicorn, the flying spaghetti monster or any other "creation" that is described in a way that can't be defined in a non-contradictory way. The fact that there has been made labels for this particular family of unprovable hypothesis (aka religions) does not make it any different than any other.

I don't know how far back you'll have to go, but at some point in history nobody had any concept of what a vampire might be. Today you don't need searching the 'net for very long to find people who've made the idea of vampires so much a part of their "reality" that they drink each others' blood and/or think sunlight hurts them. If you ask people if they believe vampires exist, how many will refuse to answer until you've defined what a vampire is? And how many would've answered your question with a yes or a no (or I don't care) before the idea of vampires came around? Does this significant change in how people would reply to such a question make it more likely that vampires do exist?

Elmofongo: They do, all you gotta do is glue a makeshift horn on a horse and BAM a unicorn ;)
But unicorns are magical - we're not simply talking about a horned horse here (that'd be a lame religion). They can use their magic to become invisble, like small, pink rootkits.

What a thread.
how did religion and god get involved in a thread where you are curious about female

Some distractions have been necessary.
Whats the point of this? ;)

It falls in the category of,"One topic lead to another."

Bloodygoodgames: I don't suffer stupid women lightly :) Never have. They give the rest of us a bad name. Actually, I will say she seems like a really nice person and has a very large fan base, but it's the way she "acts dumb" when I don't really think she is that drives me nuts. Typical "girly" behavior. (She does have a nice video up today about her grandfather dying though -- that is touching, I have to admit). There are some amazing commentators on YouTube though. TotalBiscuit is phenomenal. I also love Necroscope86, The Yogscast, In the Little Wood (Martyn of The Yogscast) and Athene Wins are also amazing. I figured out this week I now watch about 4 hours of gaming videos a day on YouTube. It's an OBSESSION :)

Hesusio: I've never quite figured out if Dodger actually has some merits as a gaming commentator or she's just popular because tits. I admit I've watched very little of her videos, but from what I've seen, her regular news show is extremely simplistic (to put it mildly) and her Let's Plays are mediocre at best. Really, she doesn't play any better than average and her commentary isn't particularly funny or insightful (though admittedly, that's a rather subjective claim). Normally I wouldn't be so conflicted about this sort of thing, but he fact that TotalBiscuit of all people seems to have quite a bit of respect for her as a commentator is really quite baffling.
Actually, I don't think TotalBiscuit does have respect for her (watch his automatic facial expressions which he quickly hides sometimes when she says something even dumber than usual). They are both part of The Game Station network on YouTube, so I think he's forced to do co-videos with her to promote both their channels and others.

TB does NOT suffer fools gladly. His wife is his agent and not only runs his entire business but, from what I hear, she's a very able manager that has been pretty instrumental in increasing his success. I don't think a guy who is married to a woman that smart would have much respect for Dodger :)

And yep, she's a below-average gamer, IMO, that most of the time isn't particularly interesting either. Compare her to Necroscope. He's actually only an average gamer, but he's smart, funny and interesting to listen to. In his case, I don't care about his gaming skills as I just find him entertaining. Dodger, as nice as i do believe she is, doesn't have good gaming skills or anything that fascinating to say.

Adzeth: I'd be like super happy if people started saying men and women instead of male and female. I knew this one guy who kept calling women "naaras" (female) and it was so creepy that it makes me lose faith in humanity. Is there even a reason to use male/female as nouns?
LOL, that was bugging me too. But........after I thought about the original poster's intentions with the use of the language, I decided he might be using it to include 'males' and 'females' that technically aren't 'men' and 'women' ........yet. So, I gave him the benefit of the doubt :)

You're welcome.
Wow this thread has really derailed. But that's probably a good thing, because it was kind of a silly question, no offense ;)
Really! I was like wow, how did this thread get to 7 pages? So then I start seeing stuff about God and atheists. ROTFL

Normally that would be my explanation as well, but I don't think it really covers it. Along with Jesse Cox (who's actually really good at what he does), Dodger is a regular on The Game Station podcast. The podcast is organised and run entirely by TotalBiscuit and he could indeed choose anyone on The Game Station to be on it, and yet he makes Dodger a regular. Not to mention he praises her quite a bit on The Mailbox.

Come to think of it, maybe they're RL friends? That would certainly explain things.

Qbix: What good will that knowledge do you ?
He wants to know whom the narcs are so that he doesn't get in trouble for the several kilos of "other stuff" that he's about to offer to trade for games.
Atheism: I never get it why it always gets so heated debates in e.g. US, from both sides. I have both religious and atheist friends here, and I'm somewhere in between. I don't see them at each others' throats.

Females: I think they should be banned from this forum, as they may make our minds deviate away from gaming.

Mostly because of the fundamentalists. Atheists themselves have always existed in the US, or at least have since very early on.

But you get religious nutters that aren't OK unless they're persecuting everybody else that isn't of the same mind. Then they complain about persecution when an institution is forced to stop engaging in religious activity.
