I just made this comment on a Eurogamer story about Apple vs. Xbox:
I love all these doom and gloom stories that miss the fact we have new consoles coming in a year and MS and Sony are not, generally, that stupid. Chances are the new systems know where the wind is blowing and will embrace all this stuff, and likely do it in a polished way because they sat back and watched these trends form and suffer through the early days. If MS releases an Xbox without first-day digital versions, big sales, free-to-play, constant patching without cert or long cert and other such things they are IDIOTS. And I don't think they're IDIOTS.

You never know though.
The "you never know" was added because I immediately felt after writing that paragraph that no, these huge lumbering corporations might actually be stupid enough to release a 2005 console in 2012, internet and mechanics wise. I would certainly hope not, I can't imagine they would, but... you know... they can actually be pretty stupid sometimes.

Do you think either MS or Sony are stupid enough to release a new console next year without essentials like day-one digital, easier patching process, easier cert process, free-to-play, hard drives, etc?
I think Sony will get it right, but I'm not sure about MS. Sony needs to if, for no other reason, to continue to exist in the video game space. Frankly they're dying out there and they need to know how to keep relevant. They've been progressing, albeitly slowly, with the PS3 with these things you mention, so I think they know what the market wants.

I say I'm unsure about MS because they are a stubborn bureaucracy the size of Asia. The only way they'll really get forward is for there to be a big fight between two people in upper management, one who is progressive on these things and the other who is not. The other may or may not be Ballmer, btw.

Sony is dying because of their TV business and some other niche hardware stuff. Their games business is profitable last I checked and the PS3 is actually in second place worldwide, the 360 is in third.

That was all before the Vita though, who knows how that has hurt them.
I do not know if this is relevant to the topic, but this comment from the escapist is fitting:

"And yet we've been waiting for a proper response for quite some time while MS and Sony still sit over only a table away from the gamers.

What I expect to see when it happens though is this:

Microsoft hype up Glass and it's connectivity with phones and tablets as if it's the greatest innovation ever while continuing with the failure Kinect.

Sony will continue to push it's hardware while trying to come up with a new Wii styled mote of it's own and possibly a return of the eye toy only years later to the party again.

Nintendo as usual will try something new and everyone will just point and laugh while thinking highly of themselves.

PC will still be there still claiming they are the master race while they scoff another packet of ignorance.

Bottom line, I don't care what the next gen brings because I already know it's going to start with more fanned flames and we'll have more tech geeks trying to one up another on which console or hardware is more "superior" when you could just sit the hell down and play the damn console and shut the hell up.

That being said I look forward to grabbing myself a Wii U in the future because I want to not because it's "better" or superior in graphics" it's because I desire to try (change)".
Xbox has gone to the dogs a while ago

I'm not even talking Nintendo seriously at this point, they just stopped caring

At this point, the only Company that I expect to deliver a decent next gen console is Sony

Also: I'm pretty sure neither MS or Sony are "Idiots" but that guy does have a point in a way, we use PC's everyday and take multiple features for granted when they are not present on Consoles

Also x2: Apple will not release a console in the future, people have to get over it, and even if by some mirace they do if will fail 10 times harder than the Pippin

Armchair analysis is fun. If I didn't do it I would just play my shooters and RPGs on my PC and ignore the entire console market.

...PC IS the best, this is not an opinion, this is a fact

Good god...it's the Wii all over again at this point

Well hey Pikmin 3 and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is worth it once the WiiU issues are fixed and cheaper.

Also it may aswell be my last console after this and 3DS I am going all PC.....even though I stll have to learn how to install mods and patches and games myself.

No console is worth buying for only 2 games

People bought Wii's to play TP/Galaxy then complained that only a few good games a year came out for the Wii, I don't expect anything to change with the WiiU

Sorry I am a huge pikmin and monster hunter fan, the latter game that rarely gets a new release in the west.
Apple doesn't have to release a console if more kids want Ipads anyway.
I'm pretty certain this gen will be the end of Sony consoles, they are too dependent on "white elephants"

What do you mean by "whit elephants?"

People actually think there will not be a "PS4"?

Seriously?
There'll be a PS4...just no console after it.
"White elephant"=powerful, expensive tech that loses money
I dont think MS will drop the ball on this one, because they got shafted over their HD movie drive, but the next will more than likely ship with Bluray, then they started to increase the size of their HD's significantly to compete with the PS3 (original 360 shipped with a 20g HD or and Arcade version with no HD), then they started adding on an internet cable socket, then eventually went wifi, again to compete with the PS3.

I dont think they want (or can afford) to play catch up with PS4, they will need to hit the ground running, if they want to make a decent enough impression. I think the Kinect was a step in the right direction, my kids love the games and also it allows them to talk to their mates while playing minecraft etc. I'm sure MS will build on this innovation significantly.

I have a PS3, but I have no idea how Sony will work out, I only use it for movies and exclusives. But they had the foresight to include all the above and backwards compatibility with the PS3, I dont think they will be found wanting with their next iteration, it will probably be easier to program for, as well, I think.
