I just made this comment on a Eurogamer story about Apple vs. Xbox:
Do you think either MS or Sony are stupid enough to release a new console next year without essentials like day-one digital, easier patching process, easier cert process, free-to-play, hard drives, etc?
I love all these doom and gloom stories that miss the fact we have new consoles coming in a year and MS and Sony are not, generally, that stupid. Chances are the new systems know where the wind is blowing and will embrace all this stuff, and likely do it in a polished way because they sat back and watched these trends form and suffer through the early days. If MS releases an Xbox without first-day digital versions, big sales, free-to-play, constant patching without cert or long cert and other such things they are IDIOTS. And I don't think they're IDIOTS.
You never know though.
The "you never know" was added because I immediately felt after writing that paragraph that no, these huge lumbering corporations might actually be stupid enough to release a 2005 console in 2012, internet and mechanics wise. I would certainly hope not, I can't imagine they would, but... you know... they can actually be pretty stupid sometimes. You never know though.
