Yeah, I'm making ANOTHER gay thread...
Anyway, saw this on gamepolitics and thought it might be worthy of discussion
http://www.advocate.com/exclusive_detail_ektid107493.asp
“We also have to stop putting things into games that turn off gay players,” Brathwaite says. For example, “how many games have you played that put you in control of a male character and then asked you to save a princess?”
Apparently game heros are ruled by their dicks and not by any loyalty to the monarchy they serve. Hehe that might be a fun thing to add to a game, your classic rescue the princess plot where at the end she basically says she's going to shag him and your character says "Ahh no thanks ma'am, I'm actually gay"
Obligatory gay joke: Look at that picture! They're using PS1 controllers and not even Dual Shocks! How gay is that?? Somewhat ironic that they're using an image like that to apparently illustrate change when the controllers indicate gaming from a period before this new slightly more gay friendly era.

Maybe games should have three versions: One for straight people, one for gay people, and one for animals.

Fix'd.

I'm all for equal rights, but those people freak me out.
Disclaimer: I've only read Aliasalpha's quote, I haven't clicked the link. But, I'm not quite sure I understand the logic in that line. If getting a prince to save a princess is going to turn off gay players, than getting a prince to save another prince is going to make both groups happy?
Part of me thinks it's only going to end as something stereotyped and cliché. Gay characters or not, games have a habbit of this. (citation needed!?)

Compared to what else is out there, the Furries are pretty tame.

Warning to people who don't know this and don't know the obvious: don't search for it!
If you do, your a braver person than I.

Braver is NOT the word I'd be using...
Yes, I'll agree to that. Alas a single word does not quite describe such an individual.
how about 'sickarsefreakwhoshouldbequietlytakenawayandhitrepeatedlywithagreatbigstick'?
I'd suggest rubbing their noses in it but...
Anyway, topic: Discuss the article
If I only played games with subject matter that interested me, I wouldn't play games at all. Describe me the premises of my top ten favourite games, and I just wouldn't give a shit.
Almost every single game I play, no matter how much I enjoy it, forces me to play a role that is diametrically oppposed to my own beliefs. The situations that come up in these games bear no relevance to my life at all, and I don't expect to ever play a game where they do.
There's simply no way I'm alone in this. Take the most clear-cut example of populist macho heterosexual idiocy, Gears of War - no matter how much somebody enjoys the experience of playing that game, I refuse to believe more than a small percentage would genuinely identify with what's going on. It's pure, silly, escapism.
And that's why it makes perfect sense that gay people would feel alienated as they play games. It's because they're people playing games. It's a form of entertainment that is inherently based around role-playing. You're never yourself when you play.
I share the wish for more LGBT themes in games, but only to diversify the incredibly narrow field of subject matter, to demonstrate the maturity of the industry*, and because I believe that such themes are in danger of becoming taboo, which is a terrible thing.
*as always, displays of 'maturity' must be approached carefully, because they can - and usually do - backfire hilariously

When I see big budget blockbusters games like Fallout 3, I tend to agree that yes, games are getting more gay by the year.

I'm not sure what this even means, but I'm 99% sure that it's an awful comment and I wish to condemn it thoroughly

They make me laugh. Especially when they seem to forget that not everyone as their freak animal fetish thing going on and they forget to act 'normal'.
