Or should I go look for patches for any GOG games I buy?

If not patched, does GOG offer the patches?

I know they modify the games to be sure they work on modern operating systems ( vista and win 7) Or at least I think I read that someplace.
Yes they are fully patched, on the page for each game it should also say that exact version.

What about Sanitarium?

Nope, it doesn't... and we really can't know that unless we test each game.
Latest official patch, anyway. Unofficial patches, like the 1.5 patch for Giants or the 1.2/1.3 patches for Fallout are not built in.
Er.. I see.. I think...

It's funny about patches. There are patches and then there are patches. System Shock 2 is at the top of the list for most wanted game for GOG to get But it has really sucky graphics. Even if GOG gets to sell it at it's latest version it will still suck - Unless you know where to get the texture enhancement mods, sound mods, and tons of other mods made for it that bring it kicking and screaming into the light of this new century. I have such a copy fully patched and it's pretty cool.

I think in every game's forum there should be a sticky telling you where to get the best patches and mods even if they are unofficial patches.
I made this in July of 2010. It was a list of games with patch versions on their game cards. Many new releases since then so it's missing much info and it is possible that some have been re-released with newer versions. If I have time I will try to update it and add any missing games with patches on their game card.

I see. I seem to remember the Gog staff saying repeatedly that all games are patched to their latest official versions. However it is likely that they've missed some.

You're on a site dedicated to retro games saying a retro game has bad graphics and that it sucks because of that?
There's a very few games (like Temple of Elemental Evil) that have a recent patch, but not the most recent patch, in order to maintain compatibility with popular mods.

You noticied that too?
Yeah, it does seem sort of silly at a Retro games site to attack retro games because they don't have state of the art graphics.
There are also legal reasons why GOG is reluctant to include unoffical patches or mods:For every one that works well there is one that is badly programmed and might actually bug up the game and force a reinstall. GOG does not want those problems..and I can't blame t hem.
Age of Wonders 1 isn't patched completely. 1.4 (I think that's the right version) is available still. 1.3something is the GOG version. In my effort to get the goddamned thing to work on my computer (utter failure) I tried the patch. Unfortunately, it tacks on a CD check so perhaps that's why GOG didn't go with that version?

I'm sure there's someone out there who can educate.

Of course it's understood that the graphics suck compared to today's standards. - Many folks would never be tempted to play such an awesome game as SS2 without it having been upgraded. That would be bad for GOG sales of the game.

And, I'm entitled to such an opinion. For one, it's true and for another I have been playing computer games since the 70's on IBM terminals and mainframes way before the Atari 2600 or god forbid an IBM PC was ever dreamed of. I played games where the graphics were made up of ascii characters - whole environments dungeons, loot, monsters and players - and this used Lots of processing power. I've done my time better than most around here. When I say graphics suck, I KNOW what i'm talking about. Doesn't mean the game sucked.

thanks for the list, started to add the info to the wiki :)

You're welcome, it is about a year old and missing all the games released since then. I need to go over it and update any changes to the existing games and add patch versions for games added since then. I am sorta busy this week but might try to get it done this weekend. I will reply to this post if / when I get it done. The list includes ONLY the patch version for games that have it listed on their GOG game card. It would be nice to add the patch version for ALL GOG games.

In the meantime, if you want to update it, please do, post back the completed list if you would. . . =)
