Ubivis: Always good to look at the wiki regarding unofficial patches ;)
http://www.gogwiki.com/wiki/Arcanum
It'd be nice to know which games here on GOG have fan patches, and like with Arcanum, which are essential so game breaking bugs are fixed.

And good work with the GOG wiki.

This is a good idea... I will think about a way to put up a list, that is easily accessible :)

Well, I think it's a good habit to always check game subforum on GOG to seek for useful fan patches or mods.

For old classic games there will almost always be something that enhances the game. Like unreal graphics mod, extra maps for RTS games etc.

[[Category:Fan_Patches]] (or however the wiki format is)?

yes, but a automativ way is much easier than browsing all of the games and post that information ;)
thanks for all the responses, i installed the fan patch before i started.
to be honest.. ive got to the point where i dont care if i get stuck due to a bug.
after 30 years of playing computer games it takes thick black smoke coming out of the back of my computer to get me at all worried.
i just play these games for fun. i dont like to get upset about gaming. its all good :)

I'm not sure you'd give the same response if you got 30 hours into the game, put time and effort into leveling up etc, and then never being able to progress to the next part, and never being able to finish the game. Money/Time wasted?

Still, in this case, the fan patch will stop that from happening.

been there many times. what can you do?
i bought fallout tactics and had a bug that duplicated chars. and prevented me from progressing (on 2nd last level and would have had to go back quite far to correct it) still refused to be angry. i just accept victory for breaking the game and started a new game.
handing over the responsibility for your happiness to an RPG is not for me.
i just like to play what works out and move on to the next thing. i know the risks.

Still, in this case, the fan patch will stop that from happening.
good to know, thanks.

to all: my original sentiment still holds. I CAN BE A STEAMPUNK ELF IN ONE OF THE MOST INANE RPGS EVER FOR £1.50

YES GOG. YES.
bugs or not IM IN. (and thanks for the MOD tips in the forum)
as far as i see the modern alternative to bugs is to have half finished games on the market and loads of promises of updates and DLC. i find that all pretty tiresome.

I'm going to assume this is a typo. Otherwise I'd have to kill you. -_-
Yeah, that 50% off promo for Arcanum just forced me to buy it - this game is so great, that at that price I just had to buy it and the fact that I might not have enough time to finish it doesn't matter.

Regarding bugs - fan patch fixed a lot of them, but I was progressing steadily without it few years ago (past the Stillwater Giant quest I think) so it was still doable w/o it.

Emergency saving was a key to not getting frustrated in this game (I always had several saves, between 30 - 45 mins of playing each one + quick save for combats) and I use the same style of saving my progress now, even with so many bugs fixed by the fan patch, just to be sure that I can evade some nasty game breaking situations and I highly recommend saving on multiple slots to anybody that plays Arcanum - it can save you a lot of time and can secure the pleasure from gaming.

good call, ive been doing just that.
i think this game is great enough to be a must play for fans of tabletop style crpgs.
theres a lot in there, bugs and all.
and restarting in this game looks like it could be fun also. similar to fallout 1 + 2
im glad you are enjoying the game ;) its kind of comfortingly dull and totally epic at the same time!
what kind of character are you working on?

I completed the first fallout, but on fallout 2 that damn water filter really frustrated me. I just couldn't be bothered to find it in the end.

I play as half-elf male technologist gentleman. Currently I'm low level and do most of the killings with rapier (as it's fast and I tend to run with no encumbrance for max attacks) but later on I plan to go heavily into firearms (finding a schematics that require high proficiency in more than 1 technology branch boils my blood ;D).

Btw. I don't know about any other cRPG game in which wearing an elegant smoking jacket over your standard battle armor/vest had so much impact when interacting with NPC's. I literally bought myself a top hat just to look good, but price of the pocket watch stopped my madness for now ;D

ha! i just realised that myself in tarant after a while..
been dashing around in my red suit and yes.. i bought the top hat.
rumour has it you can sneak into the bates residence and dress as a servant.. ;)
im playing a day mage elf. my power is weak at night but high in daytime. havent got my head around schematics yet beyond magus making me some spring traps.
so far mainly spent my char points on base stats and spells. not so much on abilities.
i imagine your game will turn out quite differently.
if you are playing through it now perhaps we should make a thread in the arcanum part of the forum to share tips and stories etc

ok... admit it.. did you try the dress to see if it was possible?
avatar
gameon: Well hopefully you'll be able to get past the amulet/rabbit quest part. I had a game breaking bug.
avatar
AFnord: *can't even remember that part*

If you play a mage-type character, save yourself a lot of headache and take the first necromancy (black) spell. There is one point in the game (near the half-way point of the main story) where you will go up against some enemies that are incredibly frustrating/overpowered compared to where in the game they are, and that spell will be of great use there.
noted, thanks :)

Good idea, I've replied here: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/arcanum_of_steamworks_and_magick_obscura/arcanum_lets_discuss_your_experience
