The tablets that are already on the market have such poor sales because there isn't anything thay can do that doesn't already have a cheaper or better solution. The fact that is says Apple on it will give it a sales boost over already existing product. But like has already been mentioned, what is the real point for this thing? And it has an ARM processor, so there is very few non-Apple approved software to use on this.
Does anyone know what the price point for it is? I'm sure it will hover around the $1000 point. Apple won't risk cannibalizing Mac Book sales. I'm sure that's the reason why Apple doesn't have a netbook of their own. A $500 price point for this or a netbook would kill low end Mac Book sales.

They said the CPU is custom designed, exactly what that means I have no idea, but I'm pretty sure Linux will be hacked into it at some point.
Depending on the model, between $499 and $829 in the US (says so on the site), don't know about the rest of the world but probably higher (usually same numbers in the Euro-zone, meaning higher actual price since the Euro is worth more than the USD, and numbers*10 in Sweden even though it should be closer to numbers*7).

I can kinda see the appeal of chilling out on the sofa and surfing the web on it. But other than that, i'm not sure.
Can't really imagine when i'd watch movies on it, at home i'd use my pc/tv, on the train an iphone size is fine for movies/tv.
I'd imagine that e-Ink screens like the Kindle are much better for reading, so frankly i'm still more tempted by one of those. A touchscreen e-ink kindle would rock.
For email and such I'd probably rather have a keyboard, but an iphone would do just as well as this.
Can't imagine doing much in the way of photo editing, gaming, etc.. on this.
While a lot of people will think it's better than the kindle/nook simply because it's color, i'd say the opposite - at least for eye-strain, reflections, books and battery life.
If it was the same price as a kindle, i'd take the kindle. At the price it's going for, no thanks.
But if and when this tech becomes dirt cheap, i wouldn't mind having one or two around the home for relaxed web surfing...
edit: ps/ But hopefully this'll lead to kindle price drops. If they had a touchscreen kindle that was half way between the two current versions, that would rock!

Ya, I was just going to comment that I saw the prices. Less than I expected. But, to me, it just looks an expensive toy. I'm sure someone would have a legitimate (i.e. non-entertainment) reason to use one though.

The best result of this is that it's going to cause Amazon to lower the price of the Kindle and/or offer an upgraded Kindle. I know there's a lot of research going in to making E-ink screens that are touch screen and have color. I just don't know how far down the pipeline that is.
The iPad looks like it would be a cool toy to have, but I wouldn't buy a first generation model. There's a good chance that this will drop in price. There's definitely going to be an improvement in features. Plus there's no apps other than iPhone ports. Time will change much of this for the better. So I'm willing to wait a little.

I believe that was the iPod Touch, or the iPhone... on the other hand, this is just a larger more high-res version of the iPod Touch.
I WOULD like to see them using the handwriting recognition of the Newton in a modern tablet/pocket device though (I do believe it's still "unexcelled", to use a word many people have now become familiar with).

No multi-tasking... WTF?? Can't surf the internet, listen to music, etc, at the same time? What if I want to write something while looking up stuff on the internet?
No flash = no movie watching/game playing on internet, so you're stuck with whatever itunes gives you.

Considering no Apple device allows for Java or Flash, it has no appeal at all to me. No multi tasking is ridiculous as well - this is another overvalued piece of crap. Remember the Mac Air? I predict another such failure.

I bought the Apple shit (iPod) once, I will never do the same error again.

No USB, no optical drive, closed software development (everything must pass through the App Store), no real OS (which means no multitasking and no desktop software compatibility), no physical keyboard, no memory expansion, no removable battery, no Flash playback... the list goes on and on... what does this piece of garbage actually have going for it?
If anyone but Apple had announced what amounts to an obese iPod Touch it would be the subject of widespread ridicule. Grand Overlord Steve would like you to believe that this is part of a new category of handheld devices, but don't be fooled: it's a tablet PC, and a lousy one at that.
