Whats up everyone. I'm wondering if anyone knows of RPGs with more science fiction leanings rather than fantasy ones. I like fantasy RPGs enough but I can only take so much elves and sorcerers and whatnot.
Unfortunately it's hard to find fallout-style RPGs of *any* genre, let alone sci-fi ones.
A few RPGs you might want to consider:
Harbinger - more of a Diablo-style hacker
Mass Effect - with some decent RPG elements, not unlike Knights of the Old Republic, which leads me to
Knights of the Old Republic - if you're into Star Wars, also KotOR 2
Deus Ex 1 and 2 - probably the most action-oriented after Harbinger, and definitely worth a look now #3 is underway
- much more of a Final Fantasy type gameplay, but with a brilliant story - if that's not your thing, check out [url=http://www.archive.org/details/JakeHughesAnachronoxTheMovie]the movie they made of the cutscenes

Yah... Deus Ex is decent. I'm more of a twitch shooter so the less than immersive animations kind of ruin it for me. But if you're the forgiveable RPG fan, Deus Ex is quite excellent as a sci-fi first person RPG.
I'll back domgrief up on Mass Effect. The greatest thing about Fallout is the setting and story.. and Mass Effect really delivers in that area. It truly feels like you're part of an 80's sci fi movie :)
Thanks guys.
Lets see, I've played KOTOR and it's sequel (the first one was awesome, the second one...not so much, but was still fun to play)
I tried Mass Effect, but I couldn't really get into it. I was playing it on the Xbox though, and I've never been a fan of using a controller for shooters so I'll probably give it another try if I can get it cheap on the PC.
Anachronox I really liked, I was really into it for awhile but for some reason I never finished it...I think I was just busy at the time and eventually forgot about it. You know how that is...now that you've reminded me of it I'll probably get into again (if I can find the discs, lol).
Duex Ex ...I actually forgot that I have that one. I was having issues with the controls when I installed it so I never got into it. Another one I'll have to revisit. I heard the sequel wasn't so great?
And Harbinger looks interesting, I'll give the demo a spin.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Keep em coming. There must be more out there...
I vaguely remember a game that had both magic type stuff, and also guns in it. It was similiar in appearance to fallout (isometric, sprites etc), I believe the setting would be refered to as 'steampunk'. Does that ring a bell with anyone?
What you're thinking of might be Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura made by Troika games, the same guys who did the original Fallout. If you can find the latest patch for it it might be for you. Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader is also similar to that, an alternative version of our world during the crusades except magic is real. You might want to try System Shock 1 and 2 as well, their great
Space Siege just came out not that long ago. It's like Dungeon Siege but sci-fi. I have no idea if it's any good or not.

Deus Ex 2 is not very good, indeed. Don't play it.

I've read everywhere it was too damn easy.
The Fall: Last days of Gaia is Fallout-like RPG I've really enjoyed. It's not Fallout, it IS it's own game, something in between Fallout and Fallout Tactics, but it doesn't change the fact it's very good. And it has awesome title song

space siege is not very good at all.
its more action game than rpg. infact having rpg even mentioned in the same direction as the box causes rpg'ers globally to convulse.
I can only back up the people suggestion Arcanum, Mass Effect or Kotor.
I also liked Deus Ex 2, i don't understand why so many people hate it. It *may* not have been as good as Deus Ex, but honestly, it wasn't that bad, too.
And when people even suggest Space Siege..
I also didn't like The Fall that much. Setting is somewhat similar, but thats about it.

Actually Deus Ex 2 pales very much in comparison to Deus Ex. but it isn't horrible. I mean, is it worth the full price it was when it came out? Yeah, I'd say so. It's better than some other titles out there. I personally would rather play it than Bioshock, then again I am slightly annoyed with Bioshock.
But yeah, I really do think that Deus Ex: Invisible War isn't as terrible as some people say, it's just no where near as good as Deus Ex, but if you compare it to other games, it's certainly an acceptable title.

Space Siege is a game made for amputees. (Vince Weller's words).
So, its either Arcanum, Vampire Bloodlines or The Witcher.
And Deus Ex is Awesome.
Deus Ex Invisible War is awesome too, although a bit less (but still worth playing more than 90% other games..).
I tried the Space Siege demo. They replaced picking up items with picking up 'power' or something that you can cash in at particular places for upgrades. I didn't like it very much.
