My fellow Wiggle Ninjas and I have started a youtube series (that's kinda like MST3K for videogames... but hyper condensed. It's a little hard to explain.). We've done 2 episodes so far, but are waiting to "get the hang of it" before we start splashing links all over forums and stuff. But in advance, I was wondering if anyone has any tips on getting publicity for our videos. Series like, for instance, Profound Moments in Left 4 Dead have tons of viewers. How does one even start trying to aim for that? How did they start getting fans in the first place?

Yeah, I'm planning on asking them that question... but thus far, my experience with asking "higher ups" for advice hasn't been terribly fruitful. So any input?

First off, if you go around tossing links into posts and putting up threads to promote them, most of the internet is going to come down on you for it. The rest will be polite and tell you the forum isn't for that.

In any case, it's just youtube. Unless you plan on being a partner your exposure doesn't matter too much, and your best bet is the "Tell a friend who tells two friends who tell two friends who tell two friends" method if you don't want people raging at you. Otherwise, try to do things that are impossible to find anywhere else or exist in poor quality. You'll garner interest just from being the best option, however steady that is.
I feel obvious for saying it, but there is of course the viral route. Perhaps find a clip of what you've done that really gets people, and then plug the hell out of it on forums where people are likely to re-link it.

EDIT: but not our forum, not in our back yard :)

Well, the plan isn't to "link on ALL the forums!" Just... you know... places like this, where I actually participate. I just don't want to link the videos until we feel like we've got the hang of the whole thing.
When I was trying to get people to watch JourneyQuest, they did a series of motivationals, if you can cut your work together like this, it might make for nice adverts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOXWdZvbRj8

This was the first though that entered my mind
If you can afford a cheap game, make a public giveaway on steamgifts for the longest time possible and link to your Youtube channel in the description. You should get plenty of hits, and hopefully people will subscribe and return if they like what you're doing.
Reddit. But brace yourself for some haters and trolls as well.
^I'd go with the resident feline's suggestion too. I've also gone through this consideration before, and Reddit seems to be the best choice ...

Then again, if you can stiffen your back up against morons and idiots from YT, you should be desensitized to Reddit's too.

hmm... that's not a bad idea. Pity I'm poor :P...

I might try out Reddit, too... I dunno.

This is no joke. It is absolutely ridiculous how well this works...
If you want lots of views you'll have to release new content regularly. Several times a week if possible, since most people only subscribe to channels that offer regular updates. If you're going to make just a handful of videos you probably need to go viral to get many views. Shoot a laptop or something.
Not quite the same thing, but I had fantastic luck promoting my site on Twitter. Basically it's that one lucky relevant retweet that gets you a bit of a built in fanbase, and then slowly grow from there.

Reddit probably works well too, but I've never used it so I can't really comment on it. Maybe I should though.
