011284mm: I really love the idea of zombies. In fact there are many scientific studies that have been done to work out the IF a zombie breakout were to happen how quickly and effectively we could actually control the outbreak.

In games, movies, television and books zombies make a clean opponent.
- You cannot be blamed for picking on foreigners.
Yes, you can.

- You are not at risk from animal rights activists.
What about zombie rights activists...?

- No real science is needed as the outbreak is just that, a sudden, uncontrollable outbreak.
Well, that's also true for Nazi supersoldiers, aliens, ghosts, golems, trolls, elves, orcs, dragons, giant squids and Barbara Streisand among others.

- Women cannot complain that you are being sexiest by (not)/including them as the bad guys.
Uh-huh.

- No need for children beyond any protagonists. All eaten.
I think there's still too many children in zombie games for that to be true.

- Only basic AI needed to make a blood hungry zombie work.
With all the different types of modern zombies I really doubt that.

- Artists can go wild or retained as there is no real basis for the actual look beyond vaguely human.
As is the case with Nazi supersoldiers, aliens, ghosts, golems, trolls, elves, orcs, dragons, giant squids and Barbara Streisand among others. Well, maybe not dragons and squids. At least not most of the time.

- People like to kill things and as there is no real zombies the producers can bypass higher age ratings by just including a zombie.
Doesn't work everywhere. In Germany for example any "human-like" type of enemy will bump up your rating.

- Zombies are just fun.
I think they're just a rotten addition to any game.

tinyE: In fact this thread reminds me I need to renew my Michigan State Zombie Hunting Permit.
Oh come on, is all you Americans can think of doing with zombies is to hunt them down? Can't you think of any alternatives? Did none of you ever watch Deadgirl? ;)

the_atm: I don't know, am I in the minority here of people wanting to get rid of zombies? is anyone else sick of them yet?

this is all my own opinion...
I think the real problem isn't zombies being overused, but rather the same stories and gameplay elements being recycled over and over, which is happening everywhere in the games industry. ( And in films too, for that matter. )

Now, Plants vs. Zombies, that was a clever game idea.

Oh yeah... *sends a horde of walking corpses in your general direction*

There was a movie with Billy Connolly and the girl from The Matrix like that. It's all fun and good in the movies but that's the thing, it's just the movies.

You can't train, befriend, or even communicate with a zombie in real life. In real life they are just maniacal flesh eating monsters and people who believe that shit in the movies end up as zombie food.

Well, that's the point.
I take seeing zombies over Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber.
I'm not sick of zombies if they actually serve a purpose or the game is a good game built around zombies, thus making the zombies not seem trite or if a story in a book or TV show is built around a specific aspect of zombies in a manner that isn't stereotypical.

I'm sick of "zombie mode" being tacked on to everything. Of Guards and Thieves is a good recent example of a game that really just shouldn't have a zombie mode but does anyways.

You didn't watch Deadgirl either. ;-p

It's not one of those silly zombie romance stories. The Deadgirl _is_ a wild, animalistic, flesh-eating monster. Still sexy though. ;) One of the things that I like about this movie is how it shifts the sympathy to the zombie creature _without_ turning it into a tame caricature of itself.

Hmmmm, so it is.
This requires further study on my part, though I'm still not giving up my permit. Never hurts to keep it legal. Last thing we need is a bunch of damn zombie poachers.
I've played many zombie games (and non-zombie games with a "zombie mode",) and I can only think of 3 that I actually enjoyed. Plants vs. Zombies, and the L4D games.
It really seems like I should hate L4D, but for some reason, it just works. It is so simple, so satisfying, and so fun to play with friends. It is a well-polished zombie game. There are not many of those - they are either not well-polished, or not a zombie game in the first place.

I've never really cared much for zombie movies or shows, but I love Zombieland. That is one of the few movies that gets better every time I watch it.
as far as i see zombies became part of our lives, you see them everywhere just like your neighbour

Indeed. The unknown reason for a break out and the aspect to survive for the sake of survival makes such games meaningless to me.

Randalator: Yes, you can.
I had honestly forgotten about that.
Trust the Japanese to find that particular racist card in the deck. It was also kind of their own fault for setting the game in Africa without making it look as though the majority of the populace was white. You are only allowed to kill 20-something white males these days without having to defend your actions.

Randalator: What about zombie rights activists...?
I have unfortunately heard of these people before, but they really do appear to be 1) mostly harmless and 2) a reaction to the ever growing groups of Apocalypse nuts. Zombie or other wise.
So I also choose to ignore them until I get a weekly newsletter informing me that I am doing everything wrong in my life.

True, and look at the bloat of Nazis when it was okay to bash the second world war. Aliens during the mid 90's. Ghosts in the mid to late 80's and the ever present ghosts, golems, trolls, elves, orcs & dragons of most RPG's ever made. The only one there we really need a conclusive reason for the existence is Barbara Streisand.

Randalator: Uh-huh.
Okay, I surrender that point. No point in arguing with people who feels they should have the right to beat up yet more virtual objects. Worse yet those who feel that they are under represented in games as there are not enough women being beaten in their kitchens because the washing is not sparkling. (Sadists)

I can only think of a hand-full, and they are all either story related, or playable.

You would be surprised. As most modern programming languages work on objects, make a base class zombie and program all the required behavior into it. Then just make a few dozen sub-class zombies with a few altered / new parameters and you have all the normal bases covered. Then it is just off to the art team.
zombie slow --> z fast (more speed), z fat (more life), z woman, z spitter (secondary attack), z explode (explosion).....

Yep, good old art teams. I guess all of the above are good for those who have little patience with making something look too realistic.

You forgot Australia. If you ban it anywhere it will always be banned there too. I also bet that a game such as Resident Evil gets extra wiggle room over Call of Duty even if the opponents look human.

Not getting involved in personal taste. I just had time to burn before bed and I thought I would try and explain any differences in view.

As a matter of fact, I even get those two mixed up sometimes.

tinyE: You can't train, befriend, or even communicate with a zombie in real life. In real life they are just maniacal flesh eating monsters and people who believe that shit in the movies end up as zombie food.
Actually there have been a few cases of zombification on people recorded and most of those related with the typical "voodoo" zombie are relatively harmless drones who will just work and work on simple tasks, like a small child or dog might. They often have little self recollection and are no more in blood lust then they would hve been before.
Drug induced zombie states are far more vicious and prone to the attacking violence associated with "movie" zombies. Very dangerous and I would want a decent blockage between us before going anywhere near one. Also a weapon as they often tend to take a lot to go down.
There was a case a few years back of "zombification" where a police officer shot the "zombie" several times before they stopped attacking. The officer was traumatised from the encounter (IIRC) and it turned out the "zombie" had been taking some new drug that had sent them into a blood-hungry frenzy.

EDIT:::
I also got my hands on a "zombie plan" from a think tank in the US which has a large number of reaction specifics for a zombie outbreak in the USA. It goes to show that even the US govenments of G. W. Bush and Clinton took zombies as a serious enough danger to have response actions drawn up as they do for floods, terrorism, and mass civil unrest.
