My uni just put the official grades up online, I got a Credit for my writing subject and a High Distinction for my IT Project. It was JUST enough to push my grade point average up to 5.0 which means not only do I have a degree but I have a degree with a credit grade!
Its particularly good considering I was dicked out of a genuine mark for 12 subjects. The 'previous study' credits for the stuff I did during my diploma at a different college only counted as a Pass instead of being awarded the distinction grade that most of them actually were.
I'm really quite surprised by the 5.0, I was expecting there to be a tiny rounding thing that made my GPA something depresingly close like 4.99
The important thing is that I should now be assured an offer of doing my Masters next year so I can continue with my plan to become the most qualified person in the history of my family, mostly just because I can!

As I have absolutely no idea what 'credit,' 'distinction', or a 5.0 gpa mean (US is 0-4 for GPA), translate?
Well, I just had my final exam in a basic finance class, here's a fun little story about the professor.
So the professor was a visiting faculty member from a different uni here for the year. That meant he had to use the usual professors materials and syllabus (or at least cover the same material, whether or not he had to use the exact materials, I don't know.) So basically we had a class where the lectures and supplemental materials didn't really complement each other as they used different terminologies and emphasized completely different aspects of the class. This made studying for the mid-term exam fairly... difficult. For the mid-term we were surprised when we realized he had taken questions from the supplementary material word for word, so if you had reviewed them well you would know how to do all the questions. The weeks before the final he has said things like "well you know how I get my exam questions now," etc, leading us to believe he would be taking practice questions word for word again. Well, he didn't. Apparently he is just sadistic and decided to not only NOT use problem set questions, but also make the test incredibly hard by focusing about 30% of the exam on the final lecture, which was the hardest, least covered, and one for which we had nothing to really practice for. On the bright side, I'm fairly certain I beat most people in teh class, and as its on a curve, I'm fairly confident in getting something in the A-B range. But, I know a few other classmates who are writing a letter of grievance to the school dean because this guy didn't know wtf he was talking about hafl the time.

Credit is 70%-80%
Distinction is 80%-90%
High Distinction is 90%+
No idea why the GPA system works so differently but a 4 is a pass grade and apparently it goes to something like 8, presumably for those people who kicked out the lecturer and started teaching the class by themselves because its just above a high distinction. There's also no 1 or 2 (seriously, there's a pair of 0 grades for failing and for withdrawing and then it skips to 3)

Is the grade based on rank? Or is that test raw scores? I'm curious. I know how much our grading system differs from Europe. Never knew anyone who studied in Oceania.

I was really pleased with my opus "Blood on their Hands, The UN intervention in Somolia" which I wrote as my last paper at university. It was the most efficiently organized and realized paper I ever wrote, and I got a solid 90% on it.
Perfect closure to my degree.

Your system sounds like our high school grading.
There, 6 is the highest score, reserved for "perfection". 2 is the lowest pass grade, although it is possible to get a 1, but not a zero. 4 is the expected average grade.
To get into "top" University programs (master of engineering, medicine)you typically need a grade average of 5 or better. Which is silly easy to get, since norwegian high scools are basically expensive day-care centers.
In University though, we move to a letter system, using A-F. A is the highest score, to achieve this you need 91% or better in total for everything that is graded throughout the course (usually the grade is not based entirely on a final exam). F is the lowest, and the percentage here varies, but for me (engineering school), you needed at least a 46% score to pass.

I had two classes this semester, got As in both of them but it wasn't that hard. My GPA is a 3.7 out of 4, which is great for me because I am lazy and pay no attention.

Im getting my year 9 report today, does that count? : D

Well I did well in my exams:
4th in Science (out of 170)
1st in Latin (out of 26-30)
1st in History (out of 80)
2nd in Maths (out of 163)
2nd in Religious STudies (out of 160)
So i'm very happy :)

Subject... Points from first and second exams...
Math... 11/20 (should have ask to be double checked, as everything I wrote was correct) and 20/20.
English... 20/20 and 20/20.
Organization of computers... 20/20 and 19,5/20.
Computer tools... 16,7/20 and 19,5/20.
Programming (C language)... 18/20 and 18/20.
Still need to pass the third exams which are going to take place the week starting with January 11th to receive the final grades.
So far, happy with my results.

I've nothing to boast about other than my Bachelor of Science degree in geology that I received 23 years ago... o_O

I was maybe thinking about doing geology when I get to Uni.
If I wanted to do, say paleontology, is that separate or included?

Cool. SOi'd basically want to find a uni with a focus on paleontology for my geo degree, then look to do a masters or PhD right?
