It's a crass and generally mean spirited holiday. It was started by the Church as a way of muscling out the pagans from their holiday at the same time and if anything it's gotten even worse since then.

I'm just going to say it since nobody else has. Valentine's Day just plain sucks. If you're single, it's a reminder that nobody loves you and implied that nobody ever will. If you can get a date, it's a reminder that you're not in a proper relationship and probably not doing very well. If you are in a relationship, then you have to be super romantic and spend a ton of money or you're a jerk. And if your the woman in the relationship, there's something wrong with you if your SO isn't willing to go bankrupt on a bunch of genitalia references.

I thought this was an anti-venereal disease post...

I've come to hate it over the past few years for its manipulativeness and the way businesses prey upon people's sentiments and feelings of guilt on this occasion. It is representative of many things I despise about capitalism.

My fiancée and I don't really do anything for it at all - no flowers, no chocolates, no overpriced cuddly toys. We both share the same contempt for it.

In the past we made an effort to use it as an occasion to cook something a little nicer and a little more elegant, and actually sit down a bit longer for it, but since February has established itself as the peak month for me for my work in recent years, we've abandoned that as well.

So our VD will be stew, dumplings, a bottle of Toscana Red and House M.D. Season 4.

I'm single, as a matter of fact I never had a girlfriend and I'm alright. The way I look at it, I don't have to worry about doing something nice or spending any money for someone. Today is just another day.

Gotta say, I had a great VD.

My gf currently lives 2,500km away in a small country town. I don't know her address or the address of her workplace so I couldn't send flowers.

All I did was write "Happy VD" on the back of an envelope (in my small child like writing), hold it up in front of the dog (which she misses way more than me), take a photo on my phone and send it to her. It cost nothing and took 30 seconds. She seemed stoked,

And tonight I played video games and watched Shawshank Redemption on tv (while also following Australia destroy South Africa in the cricket). Pretty much a perfect VD for me.

I'm not really fond of either VD. The ironic thing is despising one means it's virtually impossible I'll ever get the other.
