Well, I was in the restaurant today having lunch and quite a few people were gawking at me. It was weird. There was also this creepy looking girl who would stare. I checked the mirror and there was nothing on my face either.

Still, it sucks that the short lobo guy in the office is 'engaged' and I am still single. So met a hooker and banged her (not my proudest moment). Valentine's day is especially depressing, I agree.

When in doubt, whip it out.

Came in here to drop my trousers for the VD inspection, but I'll drop this Civ IV Steam key instead

Don't let VD get the better of you. Hate is not worth it - it's just a waste of energy and doesn't serve any purpose, at least in the case of VD. Especially since it is easy to ignore, as opposed to the neighbor's kids that make an awful racket in the swimming pool 2/3 times a day. That I hate, but those little bastards are a little harder to ignore :P

Yup. It's lame. My wife and I just ignore it.
I don't like it. It just seems like another crass commercial "holiday" - "The only way you can let someone know you love them is to buy our crap!"
Apparantly it's also a reminder of how much you're at odds with yourself and the world, because if you'd be content with your relationship status and/or with who you are, it would be easy to just ignore it. If it bothers you because it makes you feel miserable, you should look into the reasons for that and the options you have to do something about it, because I think what makes you feel bad has more to do with your own attitude than with other people or society.

Not directed at anyone in particular and not to step on anyone's toes, and I don't mean to be all preachy either; I can very much relate to these feelings, but if I let them get to me, I think I have noone to blame but myself.

That being said, it is a very commercialized holiday with no real meaning for me, and personally I choose to ignore it.

A lot of holidays can be triggers for people - Mother's/Father's Day if you've lost a parent, say, or Thanksgiving here in the States if you can't be with family. So too Valentine's can remind you of your loneliness, or that you haven't achieved the kind of relationship you truly wanted.

Frankly I don't care for the social-obligation aspects of holidays. I buy presents for people all the time, not just because of Xmas. The forced romanticality of Valentine's feels just the same - doing it because one is expected to, rather than because one feels the desire to. It hollows out the gesture, in my opinion.
I thought Valentin is the saint of florists and shopkeepers, that sell you overpriced, tacky crap. If you love someone you don't need a specific day to show it.
That kinda reminds me of an interview with a owner (or ex-owner?) of one of the Polish mobile telecoms, who bluntly said "We practically created (as in 'promoted') Valentines in Poland so we could sell more phones - because around that time, couples were often buying double sets for themselves as a present".

So, yeah...
As quoted from Odin

"Brothers and sisters Today is the Feast of Vali! This feast originally celebrated the death of Hothr at the hands of Vali. This late winter festival relates to the triumphant return of the light of the sun over the dark days of winter. Today it is traditional celebration of the family. A time for the customary exchange of gifts with loved ones. It is also a time for the renewal of marriage vows and an occasion for marriages! All Hail the Gods and All Hail the mighty all-father!".

So..yeah it's not all about the cheesy love fest that's gone WAY tooo commercial for my liking.

Aw, dang...Odin's real?
This year I hit the sweet spot of not being single, not having to go on a date and not being in a relationship either - just on my way to one in a rather confusing and convoluted manner. Frees me of pretty much all obligations.
