Tried DDO last nite.
I'mma have to give it some time.
So far, it's cool.
I tried it a couple of days ago, and I was actually pleasantly surprised. Unlike other MMOs, it didn't feel like a chore to play. Reminded me a bit of Guild Wars. I made a dwarf cleric named Garond on the Argonnessen server.
Thought about downloading it... but didn't. MMOs aren't usually my thing.
Is it free worldwide yet?

Seems like it.
I played it at PAX with a developer. Great fun. I got a T shirt for it and also like 15 cards that give you 5$ game credit (he said each account can use only 2 but i dont believe him :P and the accounts are free so whatever )
I'm downloading it right now. I've read somewhere that free accounts have limitations, so we'll see if it will be worth playing.

Let us know what limitations there are if you find any would you? I'd just as soon not waste bandwidth on it if it turns out I can't really get over level 5 without paying or something, might as well just play evony...

I've been playing all of 5 minutes, and so far I'm aware of three limitations.
1) You have to pay for more than 2 character slots (although I assume you could just make more accounts).
2) You can't choose 2 of the races - Warforged and Drow elves.
3) You can't choose the class favored soul.

the ads are better than the game
though to be fair, those are some really awesome ads

I prefer porn ads, they're more honest about what you get.
So far the limitations don't sound so bad, might give it a go when I have bandwidth back next week

Nice matrix breakdown here of what the different restrictions are: http://www.ddo.com/vip
No actual level cap (aside from the natural D&D 20), though to get past level 4 requires a rune of sorts, which can be found in game or bought from the store.
Another good thing is, in order to move from a "free" account to a "premium" all you have to do is buy *any* points package, even the $6 one, and you get permanent premium status, which gives you 2 more character slots, unimited gold storage, and unlimited auctions among a few other things.
So if you like the game, you can spend $6 and get Guild Wars level perks. Not really a bad deal.

anjohl: I have downloaded the installer, made an account, and am getting ready to give 'er a go now tonight or tommorow. Not much into fantasy settings, but I was enjoying LOTRO until Turbine buggered it up, so maybe I will enjoy DDO. Look out for a Cleric named Anjohl :)

I might give DDO a shot, I saw it demo'd at Gencon years ago, but I never subscribed since I never really was into D&D. I tried the pen and paper version once and we didn't finish because 2 other players started arguing too much over rules. I have played a few of the computer games based on D&D though and they weren't bad.

I haven't touched LOTRO in ages and I'm curious what they did to mess it up. I never did play it a ton though since my gaming PC has been due for an update for years and I could only play it on my Mac through Boot Camp. I've been an Asheron's Call subscriber since it launched and I got hooked in the private beta, but Turbine doesn't seem to care much about that game anymore and I'm ready to cancel. I really only log on to pay the rent on my housing most times anyway, so why keep paying. I can't even logon now anyway since I didn't update my billing info in time and they can't seem to fix my account now. I wish they'd adopt this model for AC though, it might bring some life back into it.
I bought it 1 year ago and tried it for 15 days but got bored becuase none of my friends were playing, might give it another try now that its free but im not playing alone for the second time, so anyone recommends a good server :P?

Limited chat? How does that work?
