There is still politics, but the books are told largely from the point of view of the soldiers, not the politicians. If you want backstabbing and intrigue Joe Abercrombie's books could be worth a try, and are very good regardless.

I suggest reading The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet. It is a historical fiction set in medieval England- There is quite a lot of intrique, twists, and death, just like in GoT.

Well, seeing as Simon G is no longer around, may I be the first to suggest hookers and blow!
However if you're looking for something similar to GOT (though I'd point out that there are a fair few hookers in that), why not just play the crap out of Skyrim. Get to level 81, install the mod to give all the mudcrabs monocles, and the one to turn all the dragons into Thomas the Tank Engine. You can lose many an hour in that game. Training archery up to 100 took me ages.

Some good suggestions here :)
Again though I reiterate to people recommending the books When there are other distractions like my computer/tv I can't get properly into books. Only when I'm away from such distractions like when I'm on holiday (for which I already have 3 books purchased and ready to read) I keep saying, maybe people are not reading the whole posts or something.
The skyrim mod looks awesome! I have played the crap outta that game though and whenever I install the game It always takes me hours and hours to get my mods sorted and its a big rigmarall. The mod for warband sounds interesting too! I just purchased that on steam (complete for £6) so nice one for the heads up :D .
Played the crap out of dragon age series and the witcher series, also never liked final fantasy for some reason. Also playing medieval 2 would seem like a bit of an anticlimax as I play shogun 2 currently if I need a total war fix.
I shall google legend of the seeker, merlin and rome to see what the crack is with those series so thanks for that suggestion :)
Also the brothel suggestions wont work either as they all seem to lock up and pretend to be closed when I knock :S no idea why.
But nice one again for the suggestions :) gonna look into those 3 series and the mod for warband now !

I read only your first post, where you mention you don't want to read A Song of Ice and Fire, not books in general, thats why I suggested a book.
As for GoT, keep an eze out for Telltale's take on the franchise, I think it's in pre/production right now, since they just finished Wolf Among Us and are still working on The Walking Dead.

I didn't know about telltale doing a got game, let alone it being nearly done, that's excellent news :D

Oh, no, it's actually far from done. There is next to no info aside from that it's going to get done (hopefully).

S1 link. [url=http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1442449/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1]IMDB link.
(Funnily enough, both Seeker and Spartacus have the same actor for the bad guy. Seeker is any easy recommend for family viewing - my 96 year old grandmother loved it. Spartacus though is unadulterated modern TV, not everyone can see past the blood to enjoy it. And like most shows, you need to give it a few episodes before it really gets intense!)
(Rome, I have not seen, but I gather it is a more toned-down drama than Spartacus?)
