Ixamyakxim: Also, Requiem Avenging Angel was a pretty good FPS that I'm pretty sure had some stats. Fun game, very pretty for the time period too

F4LL0UT: People keep mentioning that game, I only know it because it's often mentioned as the *truly* first game featuring bullet time whenever someone credits Max Payne for it. I've never seen it for sale anywhere and I always presumed that it may not have been that good if the only thing it's being remembered for is being forgotten. :P
It was a decent game. I'm biased because it was a game I was looking forward to and was wholly satisfied with when it was released. As I said it was a very good looking game, and it mixed the "FPS staples" of the time (gattling gun included!) with neat magic and some nice powers, that were also incorporated into some puzzle / "ZeldaMetroid" light "puzzles" (get "POWER X" to progress). Another neat part of the game is that it was one of those bridge games right at the end of "Levels" - you didn't so much "beat" level 7, as you wandered around this city and aquired a power or advanced the story enough to move forward. Plus the subject matter was just odd and interesting. I haven't played it since release but I remember my time with the game very fondly and it had enought going on to push it beyond the realm of just another generic FPS, of which I played more than a few at that time.

theonlyone: I really liked those games. Hexen 1 and 2. They were not much on stats but you could at least choose your character which is a cool thing. It doesn't even have to be lots of decisions, small ones are awesome.

So far I have heard of a few fpshooters but I don't know what they are like.

Catacombs Pack

Blood pack

Witchhaven

Powerslave (exhumed)

I don't really know of any other fpshooters but my favorite is when melee combat is preferred or at least doable. Hopefully there are a few games on here.
Hexen 1 and 2, such amazing games. I remember the first time..using that weapon...that unleashes all those spirits that hunt down and kill all your enemies on the map... Magic moments like that make life worth living. It's a shame, games nowadays don't include such overpowered weapons. :) Okay to be fair, the COD games do let the players access some really powerful weapons but nothing like that weapon in Hexen.

Dead Island is what you're looking for . Witchhaven also has most of your criteria .

Dang, sounds awesome! Why isn't this game here yet! ;(
Afaik Witchhaven never had it's source-code released, which really sucks because the CD-version runs like a bitch on DOSBox, I'd kill for a source-port.

Darthprymus: Vampire the masquerade bloodlines has a great stat system and is generally a fps and has quite a few melee weapons.
I wouldn't call it a first-person shooter so much as an action RPG. It's a great game nevertheless.

The firearms in Bloodlines are a viable but unattractive alternative to hand-to-hand combat and melee weapons, but the unofficial patch balances things out to a degree that I found reasonable back when I last played the game about three or four years ago. It does other stuff as well that make it a highly recommended addition.

There were some snapshot builds released, with no guarantee that they'd compile:

Many that I know are already listed previously in the thread. The Darkness II has a skill tree, but no real stats. The Deus Ex games would fit under that mold, as well. Dishonored, the Bioshock games... so there are a few that would at the very least give you some options. Unless you are specifically looking for a game where a choice in playable character changes your stats. Rise of the Triad original as well as the new game might also be of interest to you. Also Elder Scrolls Arena and Daggerfall might work for you as well. Those are even freeware, Daggerfall has a fan-patched dosbox install for use on modern computers.
