I play them from time to time. I like the fact that in 90% of all RL's, if you play smart and well, the game will reward you. Generally your death is because you did something really stupid, not the game screwing you.
My favorite RL story is a game I had in Cave of Qu,d. I had a four armed, heavy fur, badass warrior. I was just chewing through the game. I was just wandering around when I found a lake. For whatever reason, swimming in it sounded like a fun idea. I then got one of my arms nommed off by a shark-like creature. I was far away from a town, so I desperately tried to get back, but enemies started following me. In my weakened state I couldn't fight them off, and eventually fell to a hail of arrows and attackers.
Which is why I have problems with FTL where the game just flat out luck-screws you, and even Dredmor (which I love), in that sometimes the mechanics themselves screw you. Like flicking a switch and your mage gets teleported in the middle of six melee creatures to your death. And yes, that did happen to me.
