Dear gog users, I have always been a Kaspersky user until last year, when I moved to Bitdefender Total Security on a very cheap offer I found.

All the tests I readed about said that Bitdefender was simply the best hunting and destroying viruses. But, after a year I could say I'm a little disconformed, the client wasn't as clear as Kaspersky, and I had several problems with false positives.

Any way, the thing is... right now with my computer knowledge I just got like... 2 viruses alerts that were real, and they didn't come from my imprudence but from external pendrives. I have several firefox security & privacy extensions, I use a public DNS domain... and well, I'm not the kind of moron that download "Youtube X10 ULTRA PRO Downloader".

So that makes me think I maybe not need a security suit but more of a good (paid) antivirus with a free firewall like maybe Comodo Firewall.
I just want to hear you opinion and any recommendations you may have, since Bitdefender doesn't seem to be my thing, and my license will end in less than a month.
Do you have any recommendations for a medium-advanced user?

I've tried a lot of A/V and nothing beat kaspersky (sadly) recently tried emsisoft malware(30 days free) on a notebook but it does consume a lot more resource than kaspersky, I tried avast and it very good as avira (this last 2 free ver of them) but again nothing beats kaspersky on prevention and detection,
Made a complete scan of my pc and only Kas detect some things than the others did not (nothing serious but still)
So my advice is put KIS (kas internet security) it is expensive...very and they dont treat their customers very good but it's the best A/V out there, so if you want to be safe just go and pick it up, btw I've been using kis since 2010 and never got a virus or anything related and my pc is used by a lot of persons and do crazy stuffs on it.

If you own Windows then you already have access to a solid, low memory footprint AV in Microsoft Security Essentials.

If you like 3rd-party firewalls, then Windows Firewall Control might be a good addition as well. It still uses Windows firewall, but adds a lot of functionality that you might expect or are used to.

Ultimately, remember that all AVs detect false positives and none are airtight.

Thanks for your reply, going back to KIS is one of my primary options, also. As you say I didn't like so much their costumer support (I found a really lack on support in english and spanish on the forums, like they only care about bringing a good service to russian costumers), but in comparison to bitdefender, I felt secure with Kaspersky.

Daddy Putin and the non-death ultra secret KGB protected my PC quite well.

Yeah daddy Putin does his job very well, and like you said the support in their forums is very bad, but I must admit, every time I send them files that I wasn't sure if their were or not real virus (with the support service not in the forums) it was very good and fast the response I got from them.

What would you need a paid solution for exactly? The paid options really depend on what features you need and not on which one gives you peace of mind. The only real peace is from understanding what they do and why you want them specifically to do it, not from them magically keeping you safe for a yearly fee.

For me MSE + Comodo works fine, with SUPERAntispyware and Malwarebytes free as on demand scanners. Comodo offers its complete security suite freely, but I don't know how convenient that would be. I don't use paid protection because it doesn't offer me anything better or significantly better.

Norton, Mcafee - meh. BitDefender, Kaspersky, NOD32 - not bad, but the cost per protection layer is not infinitely better than my free stuff. I've saved money by not using them because my data, hardware, and user experience has been great without them. If I had to reformat and crap because of a virus that my protection missed when they wouldn't, that would be a different story.

I'm an everyday user with simple needs. If I was Adobe or something I would have a business grade layer of protection. If I was CIA/NSA/FBI I'd have government grade protection. But I wouldn't need (or necessarily benefit/enjoy) them as a home user.

So again, where are you and what type of protection do you need? Are you just looking for an all-in-one convenience package, or do you have specific requirements that they must fulfill? I think if you could answer this, then you'd have already found the ideal solution for yourself.

I'm currently using Comodo internet security premium and malwarebytes anti-malware.

This have kept mine and my friends pc's free from nasties several years now. CIS is also through a long time ranked as a clear winner in Matousecs proactive security challenge, both in 32 and 64 bit:

I think you'll have a tough time finding a better security and antivirus solution than this, and best of all its free.

I would echo support for Malwarebytes anti-malware. It is a great product, it is frequently on sale-ish, and tech support is strong, diligent, driven, and quite friendly.

I'm not a fanboi, I've just benefited from their hard work.

I've been using Avast! and Comodo for about 2 years, now. No real issues with either.

But I do practice safe browsing - little-to-no porn sites, no warez, adblockers, scan everything before using, regular scans, https where possible, keyscrambler utility for browsers....the works!

First of all, thank you all for your replies.
The reason I prefer a paid service is because I hope and trust that they're only making money with my subscription to it's updates, without giving up my information or having a less updated malware database. You know, all that stuff about you being the product and not otherwise.

Anyway I'm open to free antiviruses that could gave me some trust, as Comodo seems to give me, or Malware Bytes.

About using the inner firewall from Windows... is something I thought about, so thanks Dzsono for that link.

As I see for your comments, either Comodo or Malware Bytes seems like a must.

Thanks for sahring with me your opinions. Now I only have to think more in deep.
If anyone has any other recommendation, please, go ahead :)

Hahahaha, well, yeah, indeed I use Linux, Arch Linux, but righ't now it's impossible to me to live only under its hood.
