Well, this is it.

A few of the more observant people (read: the very few people who actually care) might have noticed/remembered that I posted a farewell thread some time ago stating my intention to abandon PC gaming. I've already sold much of my physical collection, and my gaming PC is now starting to show its age and its incapability to play modern triple-A games. The only reason I kept it was to play my Steam and GOG backlog - most of my purchases on PC have been bundles or GOG games, and I haven't bought a full-priced PC game since something stupid like 2012.

A couple of recent developments have put paid to my PC gaming habit though. Firstly, I have a PS4 incoming which practically eliminates for me the need to buy games that are markedly 'superior' on PC (and which I couldn't have played to any great benefit over console versions, as my aging CPU and mainboard were only upgradable so far).

More importantly, my gaming PC has developed some kind of mainboard fault that can only really be realistically be repaired by means of a new board, new memory and a new CPU. With the limited extent to which I play on PC nowadays - I only really post on the GOG forums from my work PC - I simply can't justify the expenditure. I still have my 6-year-old budget laptop which is good for simple indie games and some GOG titles, but my days of actual proper PC gaming are now at an end.

I'll still post here on the odd occasion from my work PC, as it's a great community, but it's also a PC-centric one, so there won't be a lot of gaming threads that I can really constructively contribute to. I would appreciate it though if someone would be interested in taking over the retail DRM-free releases list, as I'm not really in much of a position to maintain it any more.

As I say, I'll still pop in while I'm working when I can to see how things are going.

Hey, whatever works for you. I don't understand your reasons though. Surely you could have just bought a new PC instead of a PS4? You could have even sold off your old PC for parts (some people love "scrap" parts). What am I missing?

The problem is the way the DRM situation is these days on PC, which has meant that I've actually been buying very little for it. Over the past 2-3 years, the PC has moved away from being my "primary" platform to a mere curiosity.

As I say, I had a reasonable gaming PC, but I've been buying very little to actually play on it. I've made a few exceptions where the PC version was considerably superior to the PS3/Wii U version, or I've picked up the PC version for a few euros as an addition to the console version, but spending several hundred euros on a new PC is really not worth it for me when there are next to no exclusive games that I'm interested in, and where for non-exclusives the difference between the PS3/PS4/Wii U version and the PC version essentially comprises very minor cosmetic differences and DRM for the PC version. I have a laptop for much of the remainder of my backlog (including the games I bought from last weekend's promo).

In terms of games, I made one exception for my girlfriend last year - Tomb Raider - which I picked up on disc for PC upon release for €45, as there was a considerable difference between the quality of the PC and PS3 versions at the time. Alas, I ended up having to turn down much of the details, meaning that there was little perceivable difference in the end. Also, she got sick and tired of having to fire up the PC and Steam each time, and just stopped playing it after a while. She didn't get back into the game until it appeared on our PS+ subscription as a subscriber freebie. I think that says it all really.

And as far as "scrap parts" are concerned, I have found a buyer for my HD 7870, as that still works fine (to this day, I can't understand why I bought it, as my Phenom II was bottlenecking it every step of the way), but everything else in that PC is really too old and too worthless to go to any great effort to sell it.

I sorta understand the reasoning. Hell, I considered getting a console when Bioshock announced their DRM scheme. Ultimately, I decided against the console, since I'd still be rewarding the same asshats that insist on DRM for the PC version. But only on a platform I'm not too keen on anyway (I love my first person games and controllers are ass for those).

I'd go through the effort anyway. There might be someone interested in having a Phenom II board or processor. In the end, it might pay for a game or two.

Don't really have much to say, but it's still sad to see more and more people go (or post here less often). Hope the PS4 works out for you (not really interested in one at the moment).

Best of luck to you. Im here to stay. I can not afford a PS4 so that's not an option for me + the heavy drm on PS4 is bad and not to mention game prices.
