If they were Cyber Terrorists from the X-Files, then perhaps. If they are, as most of those guys are, kids with LOIC, then they will be amazed when the police knock down the door, and they feebly answer, but I was using TOR! (hey, it rhymes).

I actually like some of the things anonymous does. But this is stupid. Occupy is stupid.

I like the idea of hacktivists doing crazy things and not getting caught. Makes every day more interesting. But many of their views are just insane.

It's easy to criticize but do you have a better idea? What are you doing to disrupt the banks?

Wpegg, I think you're missing a few things here:

1. These actions aren't created/done/supported/endorsed by all or even most who flock under the banner of anonymous(in whole or part).

2. Not all such actions are done to inconvenience the average joe(Most of Anonymous & Anonymous led actions are made to harm the average citizen or cause mass chaos for such people, despite the Fox News and etc blather to the contrary.).

3. Fox News is not a reputable news source(x infinity)

An aside but Tor(it has legitimate uses like for users in countries behind firewalls and the like) can be made so you're hard if not almost impossible to track using it if you set it up right. From what I hear though most don't bother.

As someone who is concerned about them monitoring what you're thinking, isn't that what they'd want you to think?

That monitoring thing was just a bit of interesting convo with that thread's OP.....not really what I believe.

But in actuality the system does work when not used by inbred morons(ie most of anonymous's tween set, sadly). There's even a way to test your Tor setup to see if your true IP/etc is shown/can be known to anyone who wants to find it out, and docs that show you how to properly setup Tor to be secure. Of course you have to edit config files and settngs and not run as an exit node/etc, and most are too lazy or slow to figure this stuff out.

So we think. These guys also threatened Facebook. Yet its still up. Mayhaps this is just another way for the Government to get out of paying the world?

Most of the things done by the Anonymous that do such/follow such aren't done(as said above) to harm/etc the common man or do physical damage or even be long lasting, but to just show disdain(albeit not in such a legal manner) over the status quo of whatever they argue over at any given moment. It's meant to be more symbolical than anything else.

I know, just having fun. Still, I have read many articles, and seen things about how to track people through such networks. It is not a pure "court ready" kind of tracking, but you can be tracked through them pretty easily given the number of nodes that are comprimised. Basically your http requests are more identifiable than you think. A group a while ago used the overall complexity of your http request, along with tests for plugins etc. and managed to get a pretty good hit on who someone was, without ever storing a cookie, or any client side persisted state.

That's why you encrypt, encrypt, bloody ENCRYPT. Encrypt everything you can/every aspect of the tor connection. Also use a good proxy with it.

Timing attacks by endpoints has been shown to be pretty effective at identifying computers (you have to "own" relatively few endpoints to do this and while many will runs Tor nodes, few are willing to run endpoints). I believe there's been work on improving this but it is still an issue to my knowledge.

But the biggest thing you should worry about while using Tor is fucking up... just once, that's all it takes.
