Fenixp: They do? Huh, I've never even heard of the site. My ignorance doesn't mean they're not popular of course.
They probably have_a_sponsoring_partnership/own a professional eSport team in every big competitive multiplayer game, they are one of the forces of the whole online games world. In fact I don't know much about them, I just hear a lot.

Paying for mods? Sad, GOG.
Doesn't look like something to worry about. Makes GOG sell more games - which is good. We need more sales to attract more publishers who own rights to classics we want.
Other than that, nothing gained, nothing lost. From what I've seen, the site seems to be all about MMO + some curse.com clothes, so nothing for me.

trueplayer: I don't like curse sites and their so-called curse network. They have a bad history of malware problems and, in general, they promote and support quite the opposite business practices than GOG (DRM etc.).

GOG probably wants their money but this is nothing to brag about, IMO.
Actually, they're really supportive of gamers and treat them a lot better than most bigger companeis.

They have a partnership company thru YouTube where they pay the gamers that sign up with them a LOT more money (90 percent of revenue) than do any of the other partnership companies and they don't lock gamers in to lifetime contracts, like most of the other partnership networks do.

Look at Polaris (formerly The Game Station) on the other hand. Take a HUGE chunk of money from gamers that produce YouTube videos, and lock them in to lifetime contracts scamming them even more.

ETA: here's a video that explains about their YouTube partnership network - Union for Gamers - if I end up getting my YouTube channel up and running, I'd sign up with them in a second.

WereCatf: If this is squarely aimed at them, not us, then why even advertise it on the front-page like this as if this were something we should care about? We obviously already are familiar with GOG, this just makes it seem like you're trying to get us on Curse -- paid advertising -- and leave a bad taste in the mouth.
We're giving away free games. Many GOG.com users are already Curse.com premium subscribers. This is their cue to claim the game we have in store for them. Does that seem like a good enough reason for a frontpage post? It would certainly seem so to me.
Looks like they already ran out of keys according to their giveaway page.

I love GOG and I support their going out and setting up mutually beneficial deals to grow the user base here.

But I have to agree with a lot of the commenters here that the announcement reads like a poorly-written press release and doesn't explain what Curse is or why any of us should care. GOG says that they love the service, but they don't tell us why. It also doesn't seem like a service that's in any way essential to the GOG user. My takeaway is that it's a blatant cross-promotion where GOG is getting paid to promote Curse (a service which itself seems very hesitant to explain in clear language what it actually does for the user), and that seems very unlike GOG to me.

GOG has a lot of integrity and transparency about what it is and what it does, so it's a shame to see this sort of thing tarnishing the front page. These are the sorts of antics that bring in short-term cash but which have long-term effects on users' perceptions.

I'd urge GOG to reconsider relationships like this in the future. If you guys want to cross-promote, do a better job of it. If you care about a service enough to associate your name with it, make us understand why we should care too.
That was weird.
I don't have anything against curse. I used their pages sometimes for game help. Never registered though, their site does not seem really trustworthy.
If it helps in extending the number of GOG members, why not.
But I also really like GOG as it is now and hope this does not affect the current GOG in any way.

Everything that wants to stay alive needs to change overtime.
The core values that a lot of users (like me) see in GOG do not seem to be the same core values that made Curse bigger. With my current browser setup heavy on security and privacy I cannot even use the curse main page without a problem. GOG on the other hand works fine.

Yeah I'm... not exactly sure what this service is all about. And even then, why would I pay more than the cost of the games offered to get it for free?

Online games like wow is rather difficult to make DRM free
since with a connection over the internet requires some information from the server to the player and from the player to the server.
Even free MMo,s arent totally DRM free because you have others hosting the server.

Only way of making an online game DRM free is to have a private servers or make it lan based but thats completly diffrent from games with Subscription or microtransaction based games.

Looking at all this confusion here I disagree with that notion; a front-page announcement is all good and well, but you should clarify on it more. As I said, it smells like an advertisement, you get the feeling that we're supposed to somehow benefit from this partnership, but you're not actually saying anything about it, and the announcement makes it seem as if we should sign up for the premium membership, but then stops short of explaining what other reasons we would have for that than the free game?

Fix the announcement to read less like an ad and clarify that we're not actually getting anything out of this partnership, that it's aimed for already-existing Curse-users, and you dispel the confusion. Simple.

ScreamingFalcon: Looks like they already ran out of keys according to their giveaway page.
That was a quick partnership.

Count me as the 14th person in this thread who still can't figure out what Curse actually does.
The client link pretty much explains what Curse does and the difference between free and premium: http://www.curse.com/client

If you're into single player, dislike MMO's and such or prefer to play the vanilla version instead of pimping your game with add-ons, then give it a pass.

If not, this is just an extra cherry to get people to upgrade their free accounts. From GOG/Curse perspective, this is a win-win marketing move.
