Chaser98: So, do you think it would be safe to assume that this was just a one off deal? If I'm understanding how this deal works(worked?), GOG just sells them some keys and puts out a quick blurb about them, and they (Curse) have something shiny to wave at people thinking about purchasing a premium account. If so, seems like a win/win for everybody involved.
Judging from overall feedback, this seems more like a lose/lose. GOG users are spooked, and Curse is a closed site in terms of content and usability.
For people who keep on posting that they don't know what curse.com is/does, just wikipedia it. Come on, it's 2014 and people should know already that if in doubt you go to wikipedia.

Curse, Inc.

This is just a marketing partnership so that people from that company are made aware of GOG and people here are made aware of Curse. Stop acting so melodramatic. Sheesh. :P

I don't really use other gaming sites (steam included) so I am fine not using Curse. But I have no problem with GOG going out there and striking up deals to make money. GOG gives its games almost for free during the sales, so they might as well make money out there somehow.
For people wondering what Curse brings to them... maybe nothing directly. But if this promotion brings GoG more customers, and more money, won't that ultimately benefit GoG users in the form of more games? I assume that if it's ever possible for GoG to ever get the rights to sell the most requested games (LucasArts, etc.), it's going to be costly. As long as GoG doesn't betray their principles, require a Curse account, sell the site, or any other funny business (and we at least have their word that they won't, now), this could potentially be good for everyone involved.

Luc2k: The risks are clear: GOG has a decent chunk of users in the tinfoil hat club and ANYTHING can set them off.*

*I wouldn't want to be in your shoes right now considering what is lurking behind!!!

Krum369: Easy there fella, just because I'm cautious of these types of things doesn't mean I'm a crazy conspiracy theorist. You should be worried too considering the recent increases in DRM.
Whatever crap is happening with DRM right now has nothing to do with GOG and I don't see how curse would change this. I'm not that familiar with their entire network but I don't think they even sell any games. So, unless there's something I'm missing which I urge you to point out, I still think you and many others here are crazy conspiracy theorists when it comes to DRM. I've yet to see a compelling argument in this thread that this deal has anything to do with DRM.

I apologise for coming off as aggressive/mean, but this is the internet and you're wrong!

tfishell: You know, it would have been nice if GOG had actually mentioned a year+ ago that they were in partnership in nGlide at one point, but they seemed to keep that pretty hidden, at least here on the forum. An official announcement about that would have been nice, and more exciting to me than this.

Kristian: nGlide is mentioned here.
lol?

Dzsono: I'm glad everyone else is as mystified as I am about what Curse does. It just looks like different sections parading themselves as content...
Just pay for the service and you'll understand what it does! ;)

I needed two weeks to get rid of the fragments of the curse software. The installer did not shut up after every reboot it came again, like a shuffling zombie, that never gave up. I had manually remove ALL traces of curse in my registry, to finally get rid of it.

Thanks, but NO thanks. I will never ever use this most annoying software ever again.
I'm not going anywhere near this, and it doesn't look like a very good move for gog. It was just announced that there are versions of the curse client out there that are distributing malware and stealing peoples accounts and no current virus protection can remove the threat yet.

Buenro-games: For people who keep on posting that they don't know what curse.com is/does, just wikipedia it. Come on, it's 2014 and people should know already that if in doubt you go to wikipedia.
If you ask me, it's a pretty piss poor web site if I have to wikipedia what the heck it does!
I remember there was an uproar about gog.com's publicity stunt with the D&D games announcement in 2010 but just judging by the bestselling games filter, that stunt was a massive success that brought a lot of attention. Also everything that I liked about gog.com was unchanged after that stunt. This looks like it will be some of the same in the sense that everything I like about gog.com is going to stay the same after this announcement, and it might bring a lot of attention to this site.

With that being said though, I'm with many users that are confused about what Curse.com actually does and why we should all be told about it. Going to the site doesn't clarify it either.

After reading about 100 posts in this thread, I think that I have gathered that the client helps make add-on management for games easier? That sounds ok to me as long as it's optional so games will still work without a Curse subscription. But the supported games for the Curse client are mostly locked-down MMOs? Does Curse even support any games on gog.com? I take it that the games that Curse subscribers can redeem on gog.com are not supported on Curse? Like I can't redeem one of the games listed in this ad, let's say Dungeon Keeper (DK) Gold, with a Curse premium subscription and then have the Curse client manage mods and add-ons for DK Gold, or any other game I own from gog.com, correct? I would only purchase a premium subscription to get management for games that Curse supports (none of which I play), right? This announcement is confusing.

To sum it up as an already longtime gog.com customer, what's the fucking point?

Right, that's the point. Of course we can find out what the site is by looking it up somewhere or asking about it. 9_9

You might want to get updated:
The trojan is built into a fake (but working) version of the Curse Client that is downloaded from a fake version of the Curse Website. This site was popping up in searches for "curse client" on major search engines, which is how people were lured into going there.
Apparently It's the usual "people will download without checking or even paying attention" case and not the actual Curse.com client that's caused problems.

Unless you are referring to some other malware, in which case please provide links to the relevant announcements.
high rated
So let me get this straight... A premium account consists of automatic updates and will help you "better manage your addons". So Steam and Desura, but I have to pay for these "premium" services? Updates should be a given for any service requiring a client to use. By subbing to Curse, you are saying it's "ok" to charge you for updates, automatic or not.

Ad-Free experience? The entire site is an ad - for games. If they are referring to third party ads, they are the only one providing THAT service. GoG, Origin, Uplay, Steam, Desura - all third-party AD-FREE, no sub required.

The only + for Curse is the Support for AddOn authors. To avoid legal ramifications, it's a "Points" system which sounds a whole lot like air miles to me. You can expect a flood of mediocre mods from half-assed authors if the prizes are worth anything, so more success = more crap. It seems far more like a fig leaf for mod authors to move to Curse, or at least include them in their update regime.

Building in roadblocks to services that are being provided by EVERY other digital retailer is not ok for the culture of digital purchases. Speeds of updates are the providers responsibility, if they are going to offer shoddy download speeds and purposely tedious updating methods in hope of getting a sub from you - it's their loss when the planet facepalms and walks away without even looking. Bad service is bad service and demanding payment for something that is provided for free elsewhere is simply greed.

Stop taking business cues from Michael Pachter, the voice of consumer hell.

xizar: I see this as a detrimental thing for GoG, though I'm sure Curse will profit from it greatly. I've watched Curse since it started as a small guild website for WoW to what it is now, and they've gone through a lot of changes that have not been for the better for the user of the website. Those same changes have been excellent, though, for their advertisers and the owners, I'm sure.

I was sad to see Fallout leave the catalogue. This move, by comparison, fills me with remorse and a bit of disgust.

GoG, you say you recommend Curse's services... which one? What is it you think is so great about them? Your post doesn't say *anything* about them other than the fact that they grow.

Please make this a limited time thing and then you cast them adrift to see in the Internet's toxic wasteland.

Lodium: It was not GoG,s fault that the Fallout games left the catalogue so you shoud place the blame where it belongs and not on GoG.
Just saying.
You misapprehend me. I'm well aware the loss of Fallout from the GoG catalogue was due to Interplay's license for the game expiring. I do not blame Curse for anything other than being a parasite that does not generate value for the user.

However, it's a timely reference as the events happened the same week, if not the same day. Seeing Fallout go makes me sad. The Curse affiliation makes me feel, compared to that other event, remorseful.

That actually sounds kind of useful for helping teach kids, if the teacher and students were French. (But maybe I'm just being silly because it's like 2:30 am over here. :P )
