So, I've just finished watching Heavy Metal, remembered that I loved Heavy Metal FAKK 2 when I was younger (I don't dare rewatching it now since I don't see it exactly having good reviews,) and I realize that I've never seen anything like it in my life. So... Can you recommend me an animated series / movie with darker, more serious themes? There's a ton of recommendation threads for Japanese anime, so don't suggest those - I've even seen tons of them. I'm now asking about western-ish stuff.

Oh yeah, I was kinda hoping someone will mention that. My friend was talking about it in relation to FAKK 2 ages ago and I forgot it's name. Thanks for that.

Gandahar
Ha, nazi gasmask laser-weilding bastards against fairies ... See, that's exactly the reason why I asked for animated stuff. And Gandahar looks pretty damn cool as well. I don't particulary like sword and sorcery, and fantastic planet + time masters didn't seem that interesting from descriptions anyway, but I'll give them a shot anyway.
Todd McFarlane's Spawn.
I was about to suggest all René Laloux movies. Done.

Long ago, saw and enjoyed "The Tune".

Recently, saw and adored "$9.99".

Some times ago, saw and was impressed with "Waltz with Bashir".

Heard good things about "Persepolis" too, but I'd like to read it first.

Get "Sword of the Stranger"

it has the best battle animation I have seen my entire life. While having a quality story.
Exo-Squad, has a fairly dark and mature story for a 30-minute toy commercial.

Also, G.I. Joe: Resolute, where they are not afraid to kill off characters.

Hmm, strange. I too watched Heavy Metal 30 minues ago. What a coincidence.
The Dark Knight Returns Part 1.

It's a really good adaptation of the comic book.

Hehe, I've looked at TV program and immediately thought 'Oh cool!'
Well, if you've watched Heavy Metal, why not give Rock & Rule a shot?

Same here, but in the process I also had to convince my girlfriend to stay awake and watch it. ČT2 around Saturday midnight is maybe the best time across all czech television channels.
