Has anyone seen the animated Lord of the Rings movie? My brother and I laughed at how awful it was a while back. Terrible green screen effects, excessive overacting, and other things dragged it down for me. The characters, for the most part, look the way I'd expect in an animated movie, and the person who plays Aragorn does an excellent job. In fact, I'm almost positive I've heard that voice somewhere...
One of my chief complaints is the movie's inability to decide who it wants to be for. It has moments that would be perfect for children, yet has some grisly gore that I would never want my little cousins to see. Also, Sam is horribly played, especially one particular scene where he freaks out excitedly over the prospect of seeing elves.
Don't even get me started on the animated Return of the King or The Hobbit. Those two have no redeeming qualities.

I'm just about old enough to remember that one. Not sure when I saw it, but I definitely saw it.
It's not too bad, considering the times it was made in, and that animation reminds me a lot of the "Watership Down" film....
John Hurt? Notable English actor, starring in many decent films, amongst which he was victim 1 in Alien, made around the same time as LOTR....

My mother collects the Royal Doulton LOTR figurines. Damned hard to come by these days (especially undamaged).
IIRC she has Gandalf the Grey, Gollum, Legless (yes, I know it's "Legolas") and I think it's Aragon.... and probably a few more.

i loved it when I was a kid, and I was VERY disappointed to find out that it ended in the middle.
You youngsters are lucky, with your big budget LOTR movies, for decades everyone said it was unfilmable, and so this was all we had.
TBH, I think it wasn't that bad... at least if you were young. Wish they'd been able to finish it though.

One thing that the animated movies do right is showing the subtle malevolence of the One Ring. Samwise is tempted to become a king to topple Sauron, but he resists. My personal favorite of the animated trio is The Hobbit. Smaug is characterized pretty well.
P.S. - The animation team that did The Hobbit and the animated Return of the King did other animated movies like The Last Unicorn and Flight of Dragons.

There are some good points here. Maybe next time I should refrain from comparing it to the Jackson trilogy. The Hobbit and this have their own merits.

That's why I hated Return of the King. I was kind of expecting it to be the same thing as the first film, and when I saw that scene, I wanted to throw disc out the window. Of course I couldn't, because it was Netflix and I didn't want some poor bastard to be stuck with a defective disk.

I tend to disagree. The Hobbit had two redeeming qualities: the portrayal of Gollum ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLssei0sId0 and

Yeah, I should probably try watching these again. Maybe now that I'm older, I can appreciate what these films did.

I loved the Lord of the Rings movie when I was little. How are there green screen effects in a cartoon movie? Keep in mind that the movie is old and it wasn't made in 2001.

Aragorn is played by John Hurt in the animated movie, it's almost impossible that you haven't heard his voice before.

This is the only reason for the animated LOTR!
