Well, I know I'm excited considering that I've worked on browser technology on and off through the years, but always gave Flash the cold shoulder.

You can do some "tricks" with HTML 4, but nothing coming close to the fine-grain control if by-pixel graphic rendition (not that you want to do it for everything, but when you need it, you need it).

Finally, you can do what Flash did, but with standard pre-integrated web browser technologies.

Maybe it's more something that people creating web apps will get excited about, but in terms of user-friendliness, it's hard to beat a browser. Almost any computer has one and they have gone through an impressive amount of standardization throughout the years (not perfect in that regard yet, but they are getting there).

Also, I find that after years of tinkering, the dichotomy of web page design has developed a certain elegance to it (had least when the browsers follow the standards properly ;).

I'm not saying they should use HTML4. I'm saying they shouldn't use WebGL. If you read my post, I wrote 'HTML5'.

Well, my bad.

Either way, WebGL is not the part that I'm getting the most excited about atm as fency 3D graphics would be too time consuming for me to do on my own.

However, it warrant saying that even for a 3D engine that doesn't take advantage of hardware acceleration, computers are so powerful now that they can run yersterday's graphics, no problem, even without great 3D acceleration (this is certainly the case for my laptop, the video card sucks, but I can still play the games on GOG's catalog with no problems, thanks to the ample CPU/RAM that more than makeups for it).

Sure, you won't see the latest 3D technologies on a browser soon, but yesterday's 3D technologies are still stunning and will pave the way for some interesting web applications.
