Dear GOG team,

I love video games. I have been loving them since my early childhood. And I don't know if it's pure nostalgia or if I'm just too old for all this new stuff with those popups (that declare me a “brown monk” for using a toilet or a “sadistic sniper” for shooting terrorists in their testicles) but I really prefer the older stuff. I became a GOG user when it occurred to me that you guys have Duke Nukem 3D, Blood and many other games that I played a lot or wanted to play a lot when I was a teenager – and couldn't ever get legally in Germany anyway. You guys aren't just dealing with games: you're dealing with childhood memories and missed oppurtunities. Infidels - like my lovable yet evil girlfriend - would say that you make people pay for something that they already bought a decade ago but I refuse to see it that way. I choose the romantic thought that I described above. You are my heroes.

When it occurred to me that every tuesday and thursday there's a new release these days became magical to me. All the days have been gray in my life, but you turned these two days into something special. Every tuesday and thursday I would wait for noon (or rather 1 PM) and wait in suspense, asking myself what classic game would return into my life next. Also friday became something special as this would be the day when I would buy a dozen of games thanks to your promos. Also the numbers 6 and 10 became something special (although they sometimes decided to turn into 3's, 5's or even 2's) – that was the price tag on all the love and joy that you have to offer. That's how my life's been since last summer. It was awesome.

But something odd happened recently. It's not about tuesday and thursday anymore, it's not about childhood memories or missed oppurtunities either. One would think that just offering more and doing this more often won't harm something that's been already there. But it does. My world is upside down, tuesday and thursday are suddenly the same as any other day of the week – at least that's how it seems to me. And the numbers 6 and 10 aren't that special anymore – 12 and 20 decided to join them recently and I fear that more will follow (if so, please let it be a 3 or 2 who sometimes turn into 1's). At least you've kept one promise: that everything you give to me is to be mine forever. And I am sure that this is how it's always going to be – but I'm still afraid... that the past will have to give way to the future. This is not how it was supposed to be – you've become my heroes for being different than anyone else, for dealing with forgotten memories. Please don't become like them, who boast with offering more pixels, more lies that are called “achievements” – don't forget the love.

Sincerely yours
F4LL0UT

gameon: As i haven't been active on the forums much (only last 2 weeks) i dont know what their classics release schedule was. Wing commander 4 was nice though.
It was just 1 new game each, Tuesday and Thursday.

About 2 per week with some anomalies. Only rarely did they surprise with a more modern release. The great heel-face turn happened only recently.

I'm cautiously optimistic, as always.

gameon: How has the schedule been (roughly) in the last few months? Does f4ll0ut have a point?
The release schedule has only really changed in the past couple of weeks with the refresh. Last week was the refresh, and we saw a handful of indies (and WC4) all in the same week, and this week was the "Premium new" titles, with another handful. That's not all that new, previous big announcements (Like new publishers, EA and Squeenix) were accompanied by more than average releases as well.

I don't think they're going to have monumental changes like that every week, so I couldn't say if it will slow back down or not.
From the heart, true, and beautiful.

I agree on all points made.

I do want to put one thing into perspective for everybody and I'm happy my post is on the first page so people will read this.

Corporations don't pay attention to one person complaining or suggesting something unless they highly agree, but they DO pay attention to trends. Get enough people to agree on something GOG needs to do or change and they WILL do it if it's possible.
An open letter to F4LL0UT:

Dear F4LL0UT,

Wing Commander IV.

Sincerely yours

They've also warned us that changes were gonna happen. Everyone's been on edge about it since, 'cause they are legitimately afraid what direction GOG is taking.

I think it's cool and all, but as with most of the community here, I joined up for the old stuff. I know that I don't want them to lose those roots as most here will agree.

I honestly don't see myself buying premium titles either. 20 bucks for AC:DC is a bit steep in my book and I don't want HoMM either just to make it look like 10 a pop for them. All we can do is sit back and enjoy/not enjoy the ride GOG is taking us on.
I don't see the big deal with the way GOG is going at all. I welcome it. A lot of what I have been hearing is along the lines of "You got Peanut Butter in my Chocolate" Last time I checked peanut butter and chocolate is pretty damn good, and the best part is if you don't want to mix them, you don't have to and they are going to keep giving us tons of both so we never run out and we will get so fat that we explode.

In terms of the release schedule, they had their big changes last week and their spring conference this week which made everything a little screwy. Hopefully for everyones sanity things should go back to normal next week.

OP.. if you HONESTLY feel the way you've said you do in your post..... then you REALLY need to find something more to fill your life with.

You just come off as sad and pathetic...

Your days are grey with out Gog releasing a classic game which then turns it in to something special... wow.. That's lonely dude.

You need to get a life.

Well, yes, but for the most part the trends they pay attention are trends in spending, not speaking. If their revenue increases with the recent changes (which I completely expect to happen), then I wouldn't hold your breath for some sort of 'repentance'.

I like the change as well, in fact my hope is that Gog just becomes the big go-to place for all games. But I can see where people are coming from with regards to the community.

The gog-community is generally one of the greatest I've seen, so it'd be sad to lose that just because Gog moves on to more modern titles. But then I keep in mind that most of the annoying 'console'-kiddies that play FPS all day or whatever will most likely stay on Steam no matter what.

As long as Gog stays with the DRM-free movement I'm not too worried to be honest.
I'm going to admit, I've pre-ordered the two indie games here, and I've bought Wing Commander IV, so they are doing something right with giving me something to buy! XD

Then again, I, like many others, do worry that GOG will begin to lose focus on the older stuff, (since it would be easier to release the newer stuff, less paper and footwork I should imagine).

But, if the only way they can see themselves growing and attracting other potential alliances and customers is to introduce new price points and open the borders, then I'm all for it.

Proceed with cautious optimism.

(Just try to keep up the standards please GOG. Less bad games to clog up the store, the better. That what we pay for (at least in my opinion! XD))

This is funny because it's true.
GOG held a survey, users answered.

Enough users agreed on something (new price points, newer games - indies)

GOG needed to change and they DID

See? What you said is true. Only the result is not what you expected.
