Medieval RPGs have a formula which all of them seem to follow, one of the components is having armour and weapons and it's counterpart is often having that armour/weapon degrade. There have been several exceptions but too many good games still have this annoying and pointless system whereby your weapons/armour will magically fall off once an arbitrary limit has been passed. If I could get a mod for each game that removes armour wear then I would be the happiest gamer in my house.

Proceed with your pet-peeves about this excellent genre. Rant and rave.
I almost never buy anything from weapon and armour shops because I always find enough good equipment from quests, treasure chests, and drops. The shops are rendered virtually useless.
So the actual title of the thread is Armor breakage ??? and not Amour (Love in french) breakage ?

Queen or not queen, the "R" is still missing from the title :P.

So cynical. Clearly the OP has a complaint about the number of broken hearts in RPGs. I see the point. Jahiera and Kaleid, you lost one of them at some point, we need fewer broken hearts in these games.

Good point Parvateshwar! Spread the love!

Indeed; rule 1 of RPGs: 95% of the time, the best equipment is found through quests, exploration, and/or random drops.

That's mainly the rules for C-Rpgs... & Hack & slash, yes... But not necessarily applicable for J-Rpgs
I would actually like to get mods that add armor degradation to all my games. I don't like the idea of working to get that special piece of armor but once equipped you never think about it again. I do agree that the current system is severely broken and quite ridiculous. I think it would be better, and more realistic, if rather than simply falling off or magically transporting back to your inventory the armor simply started to loose its effectiveness as it degraded. Even broken armor offers some protection. I'd also like to see armor that only degrades when hit by significantly damaging attacks. Plate mail should not be damaged by rats, or wooden sticks.

What about weight of the equipment ? Pro or con ???
Role-playing games? You must mean inventory management simulators.
Eh, I don't mind armor breakage if it works for the game. If it's a game focused on exploration, or something where you'll likely wear the same thing for a while, equipment breakage is fine (as long as it's not ridiculously fast). If it's a linear or fast-paced RPG it feels like busywork. Same thing with inventory management in general. It's a fine balance between making choices more important and just being annoying.

I'd actually say it applies more often to JRPGs than CRPGs... I rarely buy armor from shops in CRPGs. I cannot even remember a time I've bought armor from shops in JRPGs after the first town or two.

I'd love to see darklands system combined with Eschalon: Book 2 system too.
