Lou: Skyrim will be the new game with all the excitement and take RPG of the year - sort of by default.
avatar
Delixe: Skyrim will have the advantage of being multi-platform so that alone will be a huge help in getting GOTY. I have no doubt that The Witcher 2 will do very well but as we know the PC is unfashionable with gaming media so the chances of a PC exclusive becoming GOTY is highly unlikely if not impossible.
Assuming that The Witcher 2 is a good game. We have to steel ourselves for the possibility that it isn't.

StingingVelvet: Small little DLCs like Horse Armor should be free, and most of the hate I see toward DLC is aimed at stuff like that costing money. Real expansion packs or "mini-expansions" like Fallout 3's DLC or Mass Effect 2's Shadowbroker and Overlord missions can and should cost money though, and are worth it usually.
Hmmm, what I have noticed is that DLC smaller than what used to be expansions is usually low quality or lower quality than what expansions used to be. For example, I heard that the expansions for Fallout 3 are not very good, while people are much more satisfied with TES expansions. If, instead of making 5 little expansions they focus on making two considerable ones, the quality may have been better.

What I mean is that any extra content is typically of lower quality and is worse/more trivial the smaller it is. There seems to be something in the development time of those (maybe shorter times, more burnt developers, the need to create something while the release is still hot...) that results in this. I wont say they should or shouldn't charge for mid-size extra content (the ones you mention as mini-expansions), but anything that is smaller than traditional expansion packs will make me respect the developer a little bit less.

You heard wrong. When DLC is done right it offers you totally different experiences to the vanilla game, something that isn't possible in the classic expack formula. The DLC in Fallout 3 offered a new take on the Fallout world letting you see the invasion of Alaska, travelling to South Carolina and Pittsburg and finally up to the alien Mothership Zeta.

Of course that is possible but there is a lot riding on the success of The Witcher 2. I remain optimistic. Of course a few posters will likely jump in to tell me I was very optimistic about Dragon Age 2 as well but there was no real reason not to be, there was no reason at the time to not believe BioWare.

Like expansions and games themselves "mini-expansion" DLC varies in quality. A lot of it is really good and worth the price, a lot of it is not. This is nothing new.

For Fallout 3 Point Lookout is probably my favorite content in the whole game.

Same here, it was still Fallout 3 but delivered a unique twist on it.

I thought it felt the most "Fallout-y" of the entire thing, really.

I was too pissed off by Mothership Zeta and Fallout 3 in general to pick up that one. Really, when Mothership Zeta rewarded my exploration with the implication that aliens started the Great War, I was done.

Well Mothership Zeta was the weakest one. Aliens have been long established in Fallout and I could understand where the writers were going with it but it just didn't work. Also the data tapes simply implied they mucked up things in diplomacy but the Great War was going to happen with or without their involvement.

Ha, I thought exactly the opposite. Point Lookout stripped out all the classic Fallout Americana and felt like no Fallout before to me. Which is why I liked it as it was something new Bethesda brought to the table unlike the main game with recycled ideas from both Fallout 1 & 2.

Lou: Bioware rolls over in it grave as CDProjekt places it steel toe boot on its neck and applies pressure until dead.
avatar
Delixe: It's not really like that though. BioWare have effectively abandoned the RPG market as unprofitable leaving it open for someone like CDPR to come in and exploit it. It remains to be seen if BioWare will ever make a proper RPG again but it's unlikely. The only competition The Witcher 2 really has is Elder Scrolls V and that's months away.
Don't forget Piranha Bytes with Risen 2 as players in the RPG market. The release date was kept a secret so far, but it might be sometimes this year.

Yes I forgot Risen 2. It will be interesting if they release it this year. I suspect they might delay it though. Too early this year and it goes up against The Witcher 2, too late and it's got Skyrim to contend with that leaves a very small window around August/September if they want to release this year.

They actually censored that log in the game and had second thoughts. It's only readable on the wiki, as far as I know.

And yeah Zeta was crap.

What? No they didn't, or at least they hadn't when I played. Log 17 is in-game.

It is in the game, I said they censored it. From the Fallout wiki: "The human voice is completely silent. The only audio is that of the Alien babbling."

I was certain I heard it in-game. It has only been two years. What, am I getting old already? O_o

Really? I have only played 1 and 2 and my impression is that aliens are just an eastern egg, nothing related to the plot at all.
