Both this and AvP2 were awesome... though I slightly preferred this one.
It's nice to see they've bothered updating if for modern PCs, have released it at a reasonable price, and are going to try and add in multiplayer too. I wish more companies would do this.
hopefully it will come to GOG. considering we have a lot of their games already.
I think it means rebellion wants to promote their new, crappy looking version.

SirEnity: You guys know what this means, Steam has felt GOGs pressure, they're going to war, and it will be a glorious price war.

Aliasalpha: GOG version or GTFO
Then again I seem to recall it was pretty shit (or was that AvP2) so it might be a GTFO anyway
michaelleung: No, AvP 2 was the shit version. Then again I seem to recall it was pretty shit (or was that AvP2) so it might be a GTFO anyway
Negative, AVP2 was superior. Better graphics, more stable, ran in XP, multiplayer that ruled especially the gamemode that had the marines turn to aliens when they die, eventually everyone lost but we could hold out well on some levels.
Oh, and I didn't buy only because it's on Steam which I only tolerate for multiplayer games that use it like L4D1 and Counterstrike. If GOG releases this it's an insto-buy.

If you give it a second go make sure you have the expansion, if not aquire it :P
Also the custom maps made by the community like Tar Baby and the Fear series are so awesome, the campaign is not even half as creepy as those maps. That will for sure make the game much more fun.

AVP 1 is superior IMO due to the fact that they really attempted to recreate the Aliens movie as much as possible. The game took place on LV426, the Marines outfits were directly taken from the Colonial Marines Tech Manual, and the weapons were modeled directly off of those pics/descriptions. Hell, the SADAR wasn't in the movie at all, but it is in the tech manual. (I have a copy of it that I've held onto since 1997).
They did do a lot of things right in AVP2, such as adding little touches to things that weren't in 1, but the graphics seemed a bit too cartoony, and the Aliens themselves seemed to be less detailed than they were in the first game. Also, I noticed that the Predator seems more accurate in the first game in regards to detail and sounds, and the Thermal modes are nicer than in the second.

I own a copy of that Colonial Marines Tech Manual, love that book more than any other in my collection. The biggest thing the second has over the first is the fact it's more modern. After that it's nit-picky things like sounds and graphics, I thing the aliens in the second game look better to me with settings cranked to max (which my old pc can do easily) and the predators seem to have much improved vision modes in the sequel. The first may have a few more atmosphere and detail advantages, but they are lost in the older engine IMO.

Alien from AVP by Rebellion
Alien from AVP2 by Monolith
Predator Thermal Vision from AVP
Predator Thermal Vision from AVP 2
I agree that there were nice things in AVP2. The thermal trail when the Predator switches vision modes was a nice touch, as was adding the spear for them. As far as the older engine, I think the older engine still holds up with the gameplay. The aliens tend to blend in with the environment in their hives a hell of alot more than the ones in the second.
Don't get me wrong, I like the second one as well, I just think the first game was exactly what everyone wanted from an AVP game. The second one had some excellent atmospheric moments, and the Marine missions before you become a prisoner are some of the best in the whole game.

I just noticed I installed a skin on my aliens over a year ago. That default skin looks like crap really, here's the one I got installed:

I will give you that one, default AVP2 drones look horrid. Another one I just found tonight and installed after noticing I am using a skin is the Matrix Drone. It might look like it shows up easily from the pics but it's really a dark-skinned drone, it's harder to see than original or the skin from above drones. Link here to Matrix Drone:

EDIT: Found a skin for the runners that looks like the one from Alien 3. A runner is a xenomorph that gestated from a quadruped host, generally something like cattle or large dogs. They are extremely fast and really weak, typically hard to hit in multiplayer because in tunnels they can zip in a circle along the tunnel so quick even smartguns can't get them. Skin here:

AvP2 was awesome. AvP1 was awesome.
AvP came first of course, and had slightly more raw fear.
AvP2 included a lot of nice touches and incremental improvements... and the way they intertwined the 3 parallel stories was sweet. I didn't find it quite as atmospheric though.
It looks like a nice console game. But the stupid jumping system looks horrendous. I'd much rather have the freedom that the old games had.

As an FYI, there is a "MyAvP" custom coded EXE that uses modern Direct X.... Worked flawlessly for me on my Nvidia, and now with my new ATI card I've had no issues.
