Well, it may totally kill the Steam only Alien Breed sales, so for Team17 yes, Steam is evil.

1. greed is a piece of ass and doesn't really belong in the same category
2. whoever valve picks up is going to dominate the others, at least they are giving some of them a chance to have their dream jobs. you kind of have to watch out for this thing (being outdone by someone bigger and better) if you are making something that uses such stereotypical subject matter and gameplay.

Not necessarily. Alien Swarm being free is going to attract in a lot of players that would otherwise not have even considered games like Alien Breed before. Some might get hooked on it and then look for more of the same in Alien Breed.

Well so far Valve has shown a propensity for hiring/absorbing smaller studios/groups of students/aspiring freelance designers and fostering/funding their talents without all the messy entanglements you get at Blizzard these days. 0 n0es Steam DRM yadda yadda... well I'll take that and Gabe any day over Bobby Kotick and Real ID.
They expressed so much admiration for Torchlight that I wish they would absorb Runic and back them for their MMO rather than Perfect World.

It's a possibility. But it could work both ways. Or if Valve keep releasing content for Swarm then I suppose there's no hope for Breed.

Well I have played demo of Alien Breed and, judging from it, there are many way more entertaining top-down shoot-em-up games on Steam, so I would really say: No harm done. And I actually think they're very generous to give us their work for free, while they were saying in the past that it'll be paid.

Someone said t'will be free .... sure of that ? I heard the SDK will but that's all (I may be wrong, didn't have time to investigate ... I think I saw a "four pack" priced somewhere ).
Anyway, as many people I suppose, the other day I bought Alien Breed thinking "Hey! seems a bit like that Good Old UT2K4 Mod (GOUM? GOM ??) I played long ago ..... kwel !" ... Seeing now the real deal is coming out makes me very eager (yeah alien breed was OK but not THAT much fun).
I'll follow that one.
