So Europa Universalis 3 is the best game ever made.

Such a statement without adding "the best game ever made to me" would be just silly. And if not, then any list of best games of XXX time would be irrelevant and wasting internet space.

Because what you're doing is best = what I like and what gameinformer liked. Which is bullshit even more than sales number comparison.

ps. I would never put Psychonauts or Advent Rising (which is better than PSychonauts for me) in top 10 list of the year. Maybe in honorable mention.

If you're a jurnalist, you HAVE TO be more objective if you're making such lists. Because nobody wants to watch your personal top ten list.

PS. and how would you judge if multiplayer mode in some game is good or not? By people playing it! If nobody plays it, or hardly anybody, then it HAS TO MEAN multiplayer in this game sucks. Simple as that.

I don't believe there's a real objective measure for quality in games. Personally I believe that sales or popularity is a terrible way of measuring quality. To use an American tv comparison, the jocks in high school would be better people than the nerds they pick on. Series that get more ad time are probably better than the ones that don't. The bible is probably the best book ever. It doesn't work any better for video games either.

I think what you meant to say is that journalists should try to emulate the subjective viewpoint of the majority.
Yeah, sort of. But how can you judge if people like the game differently by seeing how many people actually played it?

Which MMO is better. The one with millions of active users, or the one which servers are almost always empty?

another example: Empire Earth 3 is one of the worst selling games on GOG. Why? Because it sucks.

Syndicate is one of the top selling games now. Why? Because it's good...

People like to buy things they THINK are good. And don't buy things they think that suck. I suppose. So i think number of sales indicates the quality in majority compared to average customer.

That popularity affecting liking thing goes way over my head. Solving that'd probably need some sort of insight into psychology, statistics and possibly some crazy impossible computations. Maybe some sort of a future Artificial Inanity could write the best reviews that take that into consideration :D

I've only played an MMO once, and it was in a party with my friends. I didn't pay any attention whatsoever to any other players in the game, so in my case the servers' popularity would be inconsequential. My way of playing MMO's is probably not the intended way to play them. Even if we take the game's player base as a factor, it seems more like luck than a direct result of the game mechanics and whatnot. If the popularity was reversed overnight, would that also mean that the better game suddenly stopped being better just because of a viral ad or something? Seems rather dubious to me.

/edit: edit quote for edited post for confounding edit editings!

People indeed usually have nothing but a thought or hope to base their decision upon, but to me that just means that the reviewers should write subjective, but informative, reviews (there are enough available for free for research). If they just automatically slap the best scores/praises on games of popular franchises etc. , it becomes both dull and something akin to a vicious circle. The popular ones just keep getting more popular, and some other possibly more enjoyable titles keep falling ever deeper into the shadows. At least that's the exaggerated version of it.

Just making an observation that just because a game isn't surrounded by hype and popularity doesn't necessarily mean it's not good. Everyone has different tastes though. And mainstream consensus doesn't dictate what I choose to invest my time and money in to derive enjoyment and pleasure (hookers and blow). Thankfully we're not all sitting around playing MW3, listening to Justin Beiber (or however the f@ck you spell it) whilst waiting for the next episode of MLP:FiM to kick off...

This is great! I followed the game's development since the beginning until Microsoft crushed all the excitement by making it a console exclusive.
But could we possibly enjoy playing this game with mouse+keyboard and Computer Screen instead of sitting on a couch holding a controller?
Oh wait... it's on PC, so we can choose freely anyway! \o/

Well, I hope they won't try to charge full price though.
Any Idea if it will be moddable? Remedy released SDKs for the Max Payne games.

At least those who purchase it right away. There's pretty nice Collector's Edition getting released on the 2nd of March! clicky
I'm going to get that one! ;)
