tfishell: Very funny, TimmyP. :P Anyway, just a little clarification, I'm just saying that I don't have too many games on Steam, so if it went down I wouldn't lose too much. But some people own thousands of dollars worth of games on Steam, and tons own hundreds of dollars, so if Valve completely and unexpectedly went under, and Steam was shut down, (or alt., Gabe accidentally fell on the Steam servers while looking for a lost Hostess bar, and it all went ka-put), the things that would come of that no human being should ever have to witness.

StingingVelvet: 1) They have said they would sunset Steam by removing all DRM aspects.

2) This is the PC we're talking about, do you really think people would let the classics be unplayable? Hell, they're playable without Steam today, right now.

3) The constant mocking of Gabe's weight by the internet at large is really tiresome and doesn't make you look cool.
1) Oh okay. Well as long as the situation allows a reasonable sunset to occur (and Valve are telling the truth, we're reasonably good to go.

2) Did I seem to imply that? (I think maybe there was some miscommunication about where I was coming from. I'm just describing one possible situation that GOG has used in the past to suggest what DRM could do, which is irrelevant for Steam if they do remove the DRM.)

3) Actually, scientifically speaking, it does make me look cool. So there. In case you haven't figured it out yet, I hate every single one of you. All of you are fat, retarded, no-lifes who spend every second of their day looking at stupid ass pictures. You are everything bad in the world. Honestly, have any of you ever gotten any pussy? I mean, I guess it’s fun making fun of people because of your own insecurities, but you all take to a whole new level. This is even worse than jerking off to pictures on facebook.
Don’t be a stranger. Just hit me with your best shot. I’m pretty much perfect. I was captain of the football team, and starter on my basketball team. What sports do you play, other than “jack off to naked drawn Japanese people”? I also get straight A’s, and have a banging hot girlfriend (She just blew me; Shit was SO cash). You are all faggots who should just kill yourselves. Thanks for listening.

Gabe said that in an interview... a long time ago... when the only games on Steam where Valve's games. There wasn't any "official" (i.e. not some Steam's forum mods quoting Gabe's original interview.) mention of that since.

If you're trying to be funny, you're not.

Hence #2.

Any link to such official statement? I think that myth has been shot down so many times it's not even funny anymore. If they really had made such a statement, it would be a mere lie due to many technical and practical reasons.

EDIT: Ah ok, so any such "promises" have become obsolete already.

As for #2, for some reason I can't access PBay. Damn ISPs blocking the known pirate sites! Maybe that's just good, as the pirate versions would quite often have trojans anyway.

But not to worry, at least there'll always be Megaupload to get the games from... heyyyy, wait a minute...!

Would it even be legal for them to do that? I mean, I doubt companies like Bethesda would be okay if they did that. Guess it would depend on what was in the contract.

Is true and that was only said when it was only Valve's games on Steam than that statement may very well be worthless now.

SimonG: Personally, any worrying about loosing access to my games is in no relevant relation to the possibility of actually loosing them. Worrying or actually taking precautions is quite literally a waste of time. Same as I don't hoard guns and dogfood in that hole in the yard, I don't hoard games "for the future without internet":

fortune_p_dawg: But... but... the APOCALYPSE!
Yeah, archiving games is so stupid... until you realize there wouldn't be any "pirate backup copies" in the internets for you two to obtain, if some people hadn't done exactly that beforehand. :)

I guess you two just thought the pirate copies would materialize from thin air. Anyway, I wouldn't be sharing the games I have backups of, as it would still be highly illegal activity. So try to get your pirate copies from someone else, ok?

I was speaking in jest, sir. I'm actually quite anal about backing up and archiving my collection. The last time I pirated a game I was 16, a decade and three years ago... it was Terminal Velocity if I'm not mistaken. Not a bad game but not really my thing; it was uninstalled within a few days. It wasn't just the game though, it was the lack of something tangible. I always take the DRM-free option, but I don't discount the merits of Steam. So kindly sir, please remove the stag beetle from your rectal cavity and sit the hell down (also speaking in jest, as I'm sure you've guessed) <--- That kinda rhymed! I should totally get into rap.

fortune_p_dawg: Exactly. I have some stuff on Steam, maybe two hundred dollars worth... but not thousands. It's not that I don't like Steam's perks, it's just that I trust myself waaaay more than I trust Valve (after all, I'm the one spending the money). I'd rather lose my entire game collection myself than have Valve lose it to "lack of funds" or something else that isn't my problem.

That said, some of you guys seem way too eager to either prove each other wrong, or rub each others faces in paltry, half-baked points. Remember, no matter who you buy games from, you're giving them YOUR money. You don't need to defend them, nor should you have to. I love GOG and Desura but I'm not going to sit behind my computer screen and fellate them all day long, just as I'm not going to talk shit about Steam. This is a crap topic designed to inflame the nerd hive (no offense).
