I forget if there has been a discussion already. Too bad there's no poll option in this forum.

When you set up controls (aim) for your FPS or third-person shooters (mouse or gamepad, doesn't matter), do you tick the "invert Y-axis" checkbox? If yes, why?

I'm just wondering if I'm of a dying breed because I always tick it. I think it was all those years with flight combat simulators and space combat sims that accustomed me to inverted Y-axis (because that's how it works with real airplanes I think, ie. you push the stick "up" to dive), so it felt only natural to use the same with FPS games and such. It has stuck ever since, I think my left and right brains switched places during those years.

I've sometimes accidentally tried the default, non-inverted controls in FPS games, but since it keeps feeling unnatural to me now, I don't even try. I have no idea which is more common for gamers, inverted or not, but I presume not.

Is anyone aware of e.g. FPS games (console or PC) where there is no option for inverted Y-axis?

I managed to make the transition from inverted aiming without noticing, probably because I never make a link between 3 dimensional space and what I was doing. It was just moving a cursor on a 2D screen in my mind, and I could do it two ways - inverted in games, the more logical way when using desktop applications.

However, to this day I still have a problem when it comes to camera controls. Push up to look up? Pfffffft, nonsense!!!

Like you, I cut my teeth on these controls using my joystick and flight sims. In fact, I got the joystick for the flight sims - before then it was keys. Mice? Didn't know what they were back then.

Anything that involves flying, I can't play without inverted Y axis.
On the other hand, I can't play a 3rd person game or an FPS with inverted Y axis.
I'm weird that way.
Pretty sure it is there for people like you who play(ed) a lot of flight games. I do not invert with a mouse or a pad.
Inverted in any FPS or TPS.

It just feels natural for me, can't really explain why or how. I don't think I could play a game without that checkbox.
Yeah, it is fairly typical that there is an option to invert y-axis. Can't remember not seeing it. Fairly typical for camera, too (usually right thumb stick), but have definitely run into a few games that didn't allow it for camera. Can't recall what games they were, though.

Weird...I used to play a lot of flight games and I prefer Inverted in FPS games
Always on gamepads, never on mouse. I don't know why I do it with game controllers, but it just feels natural to me.
I have a weird bias, sure inverted is great for piloting but good god keep it away from FPS games. Its just wrong :P I want to look up, I push up, I want to look down, I push down. Its very simple... or it should be hahaha. :)
Yep, I'm another that has to invert.

I did play an MMORPG called Allods for a while that didn't have an invert option in the early days - think it got added later. Didn't play it for long!
for first and third person perspective games:

Joysticks/ thumbsticks --> inverted y-axis for pitch adjustments
mouse --> standard

I built my first gaming pc to play space sims and it shows. ;)

Inverted mouse4life, dawg!

The first FPS that I tried using a mouse with was Duke 3D. It was inverted by default and it sort of stuck.
I invert the mouse for all FPS and third person, including driving games. They all feel like flight sims to me. Looking up feels like I need to pull back-- very natural.

This is why the Sherlock Holmes games drive me crazy. If they are going to go with FPS style movement in their point and click games, they should give an option to invert in those FPS modes.

Something like Pac-Man or any top-down, I would not invert.
No. Never. Never ever.
On PC, no.
On console, yes.
It just feels natural that way. Moving mouse up aims up, moving the analog stick up aims down. It's a mess if I try to play 'em without those settings.
