2012 is has been an age of wonders for GOG.com with so many great games coming to our catalogue already, so this weekend’s sale seems more than appropriate.

The sale this weekend may have a small number of games, but it is certainly chock-full of gameplay: [url=http://www.gog.com/promo/age_of_wonders_series]Age of Wonders I, II & III, the three games from one of the most famous and successful turn-based strategy series, are now 50% off for the rest of this weekend.

Age of Wonders in 1999 marked the beginning of a blood-drenched conflict between magical races, when humans destroy the fragile equilibrium that existed among Elves, Goblins, Undead, Orcs, Dwarves, and other magical races. Several elements combined to make the first game so successful: detailed depictions of mythical creatures; mixing empire building, role-playing, and warfare; and creating over 50 upgradeable heroes who could wield a lethal array of weapons. Age of Wonder is only $2.99 this weekend on GOG.com.

Age of Wonders II: the Wizards Throne continues the story of neverdying war between fantasy races with over 130 unique units such as steam cannons, airships, and mammoth riders. AoEII features well-polished 2D graphics as well as many more spells and campaign scenarios full of intrigue, action, and suspense. Age of Wonders II: the Wizards Throne is only $4.99 on GOG.com until Monday, February 20th at 11.59 a.m. EDT.

In Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic, two new bloodthirsty forces enter the world of AoE: corrupt Empire led by Phobius, and hellish demons, that breed within the Shadows. The third and final installment in the series features new races, new units, better graphics and AI, and completely new Shadow world introduced in the main campaign’s story.

Additionally, all Age of Wonders games come with map and campaign editors and multiplayer mode. Once you get into those, you’ll find there’s not enough hours in the day without some sort of wizardry. We’re no wizards, but this weekend’s offer is magical. Visit the promo page and buy the complete Age of Wonders trilogy for 50% off this weekend only

Darn I would have bought SM or wizard's throne if I had money on my paypal and transferring money takes days... oh well.
Fantastic Series - I have them all so roll on next sale for me
This is great~! Now, can we actually get the manuals for these games added? :-P
I like the first one way better than Shadow Magic. It's UI seems to scale up to higher resolutions far better. Shadow Magic looks rotten on my monitor. Gameplay wise they're pretty similar, but I kind of like the first game just a bit more. I'd say give the first one a try and then come back for the others if you really like it.

But yeah, favourite 4X series ever. For anyone curious, it's basically a sequel to Masters of Magic turned into a mix of Civ and HoMM, but with even better battles. So good.
This looks very much like HoMM. So, for someone that has never played this series; which would be the best one to get?
Hmm I have all 3 on Impulse. DRM free would be great though I wish I knew about GOG back when I bought all 3 on Impulse.
Shadow Magic is definitely the one to get, if you're only going to get one. It's even got a random scenario generator similar to MoM's.

If you're going to get 2, get the first and SM, since SM has everything that Wizard's Throne does gameplay-wise (and more), while AoW 1 actually has different (though simpler) gameplay.

Alright cool. Thanks.
I have little experience with turn-based strategy, only dabbled a bit with HoMM 3 and wasn't thrilled.

Is AoW - SM similar to HoMM gameplay-wise? Would it worth to someone that's not so excited about the latter?

I totally agree with this. So I repeat to emphasize:

if you want to buy only one game: Buy Shadow Magic. it has the biggest replayability level with random maps (but to be honest, there are plenty user created maps to download in the net)

if you want to buy two, buy SM and AoW1. Because it's totally different, and I actually even prefer the first AoW. Maybe it's because of sentiment, but I didn't really liked town expanding system from AoW2.

And Shadow Magic is the most beautiful 2D turn based strategy to me.

I don't know how this plays in comparison to HoMM 3, but I think HoMM 3 kicks azz. They look very similar.

For me, it's better. Mostly because it's much more tactic. You may finish your opponent in many ways. You may decide to challenge him in open battle, but you may want to make some alliances, and strike him with comp. friend? maybe you want to take all his gold mines to exhaust him economically? (units require upkeep and will abandon you if not paid). There's also variety of world map spells. You may cause disease in your enemy's main base, cause anarchy to force him to fight rebels, etc etc.

Plenty of options. And it's not that hard. You just need to remember to build many basic units in first phase of the game, to keep enemies away from your main castle.

Cool. And yeah Shadow Magic does look pretty. Actually 1&3 look prettier than 2 from the screenshots. Maybe it's just me. With that being said, looks aren't everything. If they are in the spirit of HoMM 3 as I think they might be then those are the ones I will get. Thanks.

Neat.

One difference from HoMM3 that these games have and you should keep in mind is that AoW Heroes actually participates as units in the fight, instead of simply casting spells from above. And the heroes can be killed, and armies do not need heroes to move from place to place. And combat maps are far larger and more intricate, especially in AoW 1.

Actually, while I haven't played HoMM4 much myself, from what I know of it AoW seems to be far closer to it than to HoMM3 from mechanics perspective.
