timppu: What?!? Weren't both Doom games piece of cakes to get to run, at least as far as I remember? I think their memory managers made everything quite easy, no worries about running out of conventional memory etc.
JudasIscariot: Try running it in DOS when you have very little knowledge at the time about config and autoexec files because there was no widespread internet access and this is your first very own computer game.... Post edited March 29, 2012 by timppu

I loved AOE 1-2 and AOM, and yet to play AOE3, looking forward to it though.
Why won't I like it, at least as much as the other games? I remember reading some people bitching that unlike AOE1-2, it has some fake and made-up "historical" characters and events, making the whole experience feel quite fake. But then, AOM wasn't really realistic either.
Are there gameplay issues?

timppu: Ah ok. Luckily your first game wasn't Ultima 7, Falcon 3.0c or Red Nebular, they could have easily turned you into a console gamer. Roman5

dude, i loved AoE3 and its expansions (be sure to play at least Asian Dynasties as well). Why won't I like it, at least as much as the other games? i never understood why people claimed that 1) AoE3 was worse than AoE2 and that 2) it was a bad game. maybe that's a multiplayer thing. i wouldn't know anything about that since i've never played any AoE game online.
the AoE3 campaigns have a storyline similar to the AoM campaigns. inspired by historical events as well as some legends and following fictional (but believable) characters. i enjoyed them thoroughly. i hope you do, too.

dirtyharry50: I wish you the best in seeking to eventually find some fun somewhere after all the work it takes to beat this bastard of a game into submission!
Actually, I do find the fun there. Thanks! What was delivered as handbook back then (for Falcon) today would be delivered as PDF on a separate CD...

Not really. Aoe3 multiplayer is great. And everybody can join in, since there are rankings and tiers, so you may easily find people playing on level similar to yours. With AOE2 i was annihilated every 5 minutes, because I played only with hardcore gamers.

Yeah my friend wanted me to play it with them. I have been and it's enjoyable enough but the servers suck, a lot. At one point it disconnected me right at the end of a quest, we had to start again.
I find their attempts at making me give them money distasteful. Seriously there's a stupid amount of quest rewards I can't use unless I pay up.

FraggingBard: Welcome to the world of "micro" transactions. TF2 does that, has done for a while. You kill a guy, you get a free present! Which you can unlock with a 10USD payment. :D
Each time... But it's okay, those boxes will give you new templates and guns giving you an edge over your opponents! If it was 50c USD then it would be okay, but someone heard the word "micro", got it confused with "pay rise", and then attempted to throw them in as many times as possible. Kind of like Steam and their "episodic gaming", the idea of shorter games more often in their hands ended up as shorter games over a longer period of time than the usual game.
Which is why we <3 GOG
Actually you have it a bit wrong with tf2, creates are indeed a cheep trick to get people in the store but other than that they hold no consequence other than being a piece of rubbish you need to delete. They don't take away from peoples other item drops (drops don't happen cause you killed someone btw, they occur every 40-50 minutes and there's a limit on drops per week, but they can roll over to the next week) and all the weapons you can get without spending a penny through drops/trading. The weapons in tf2 are pretty well balanced. The defaults are really solid weapons and people aren't at any real disadvantage for using them. Most of the weapons in tf2 are actually side-grades, they offer a slightly different way to play but aren't better as such. Although the balance isn't perfect all the time so there are a few weapons that are consider upgrades or just plain worse than the defaults. Each time... But it's okay, those boxes will give you new templates and guns giving you an edge over your opponents! The tf2 store is for vanity and impatience. Aoeo is strait locking me out of things I should be getting for playing the game.
And yes, valves episodic gaming was an absolute failure.
