Now, I know we already have a netbook thread here, but I didn't want to derail it with my personal quest to find good games to play on my own netbook, which seems significantly less powerful than those of other people. Because whenever I look for netbook games there are lots of games on those lists that my own one can't seem to run smoothly. So this would be my personal requirements for the games I'm looking for:

- can be classics, indies or freeware games
- can be of any genre, as long as they're easy to get into (I have my preferences, but I'm open for suggestions)
- must be able to run with a resolution of 1024x600 or lower
- should run on integrated graphics and not require Shader 2.0 or higher
- must be compatible to Win7 (Starter) 32-bit
- must be able to run offline
- should be manageable with a touchpad (generally not a big issue, but 3D action games that require a mouse are not that much fun on the netbook)
- can use DOSBOX, but I think it would be preferable if it doesn't (it's hit or miss for me, some games work fine, but with others the CPU has trouble emulating smooth sound)
- 2D is safer than 3D (many 3D games, even NWN or DOS FPS don't run that smoothly)
- Detailed specs: Samsung NC10plus, Intel Atom CPU N455 @1.66GHz 1.67GHz, 1GB RAM, "GPU" Intel Graphics Media Accelators 3150, several years old

Puzzle Quest is a bit laggy on mine and I think FTL needs a higher resolution than 1024x600? Gothic 2 doesn't run well at all, and I think Deus Ex and System Shock's performance was only so-so.

I've already played Fester Mudd, To The Moon, Gothic 1 and Baldur's Gate 2, and I'm close to finishing Escape Goat a second time (that one runs great on a netbook though). HOMM 2 works, I think, but I haven't been able to get into it yet. I'll try how well Hydorah and Neo Scavenger work, and make a mental note of Master of Orion 2 and Tropico (which I don't own yet). i have a much faster notebook but the games i tell you will run on your notebook quite falwless.

might and magic 6 ( a bit old backed graphica but still OK)
neverwinter nights (not sure if it runs smoothly on your notebook but i think it will be ok)

The first game that came to my mind when you said immersive is Realms of the Haunting. You know a game does immersion right when it is a sunny day and the game can still pull you in.

Yeah, that would be the best suggestion of them all, if I wasn't so incredibly frustrated with the game. Runs perfectly, looks cool, is great and enjoyable most of the time, but then the game keeps on insisting on locking me in in tough dungeons with lots of exhausting fights in a row but without (apparant) resting options, and although I know it's possible to sacrifice xp to create powerful items to help me with that, I just don't think it that much fun. :( Sadly M&M6 doesn't run at all (the older ones do though). NWN works but is not that much fun on my netbook.

I'm a bit sceptical about 3D games, but I'll add Unreal, Hitman: Contracts and Carmageddon to the list of possible candidates. I think that one generally works but is a bit laggy. I probably should have mentioned right from the start that I usually only play with keyboard and touchpad, so while I'm able to play 3D action games that way it's not as enjoyable as on the PC.

Any more casual or 2D games?

I have a very similar netbook and Master of Magic is running really good, as is Sim City 2000. Usually dosbox games are the best fit for my device though it is set up with Windows XP instead of 7. Each ScummVM game is also recommended and, for us Germans, Bleifuss FUN. ;)

Oh, yeah, Blades of Avernum runs perfectly, so maybe those others will work, too.

Ah, well, it might work and it's affordable, but to tell the truth, it looks much too hectic for me ... :D VVVVVV works great though. I've already finished the main campaign but I could still play one of the custom campaigns.
