madth3: Even if the game had no achievements. If the format of a save file was known, maybe some achievments could be created?
Indeed. I hadn't thought of a solution where the client checks files in the directory itself but yeah, it would be a possibility. I have no idea how obscure save game files are these days, though.

Which does not mean that I support this kind of thing, of course. :p

F4LL0UT: Huh, interesting. A very crude method but interesting.
Yes. Not that many games offer that option though, since most go with Client based achievement, not game based one. But if you can check the achievements ingame, then you should be able to add them to any client, though possibly without the proper date.
I agree that the achievements are silly. I really hope if they add them, there are no bugs and such that they could have ironed out first before wasting time of them.

yogsloth: God I hope not.

Just what we need... hordes of babies looking for bragging rights.
Yes. A legacy dating back to the 1980s. I will prove to you that I'm superior by proudly displaying my achievement badges! Or the message in the arcade's High Score table.

Back in my day we used to store all saved games, the "saves" folder being kinda our trophy display case. :P

F4LL0UT: Worms 2 maybe?
Nope, not Worms (cogs in the head work heavily)...

And you sure you're not confusing it with Raptor which was ported by DotEmu and probably has some DotEmu references in it?

I am. It has to be one of games I own, otherwise I wouldn't remember that.

For example you could tell when the player had reached a certain level and give him an achievement on that.

Note: I'm not for achievements or against them. Just interested in the technical side of things. :-)
The only game I've modded is Baldur's Gate. The save file format is well documented and it stores global variables. It would be extremely easy to create a mod that would set a variable once an achievement is, er, achieved and this could be stored in the save file and read by the client.

The only issue I see, is that using save files for achievement would make it extremely easy for anyone to get all of them simply by editing a save file.

Not that achievements is something I'd want to see in those old games. But I'm not really that much against them either.

tfishell: I don't think GOG wants to spend time making achievements when there are (arguably) more important things to worry about.
I'm trying to think os something less important then achievements. This may take a while.
The lack of Achievments here on gog is why I still buy most of games from Steam , I personally love Achievments in games , although I know some other people don't like them. One example is Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, I'll wait for a Steam sale even though its on sale here on gog. But hey that's just me , I still have nearly 100 games here on gog , and if Galaxy has achievments , that collection here will go up substantially ! :)
